Driving hints86Driving hints The first 600 miles (1000 km)Drive your vehicle at various speeds. Donot use full throttle. Never allow the engineto labour at low revs.Make good use of all gears. Depress theaccelerator pedal a maximum of aroundthree quarters of the available pedal travelin all gears and drive ranges.Do not drive faster than three quarters ofmaximum speed. The information concerns the engine andparts of the power train, e.g. the final drive.Never coast with engine notrunningMany units will then not function (e.g. turnsignals, brake servo unit, power steering, airbag system). Driving in this manner is adanger to yourself and others.Brake servo unitWith the engine not running the brakeservo unit is no longer effective once thebrake pedal has been depressed once ortwice. The braking effect is not reduced butsubstantially greater foot pressure isnecessary to stop the vehicle.Power steeringNever leave the steering wheel on full lockwhen the vehicle is stationary as this maydamage the power steering pump.If the power steering should fail - e.g. whenthe vehicle is being towed with the engineswitched off - the vehicle can still beproperly steered but considerably greatereffort is necessary.Driving in mountainous terrain orwith caravan / trailerElectrically driven fan: The fan coolingcapacity is not dependant on enginespeed. It is not necessary, therefore, whendriving uphill to shift down into a lowergear if the vehicle can climb in a highergear.Driving with a roof loadDo not exceed the permissible roof load. For safety reasons, distribute the loadevenly and secure it tightly with straps sothat it cannot slip. Set the tyre inflationpressure to the value given for full load. Donot drive faster than 75 mph (120 km/h).Check and retighten straps at frequentintervals.
