Driving hints 87Switching off the engineIf the engine temperature is very high, e.g.after driving in mountainous terrain: allowthe engine to idle for approximately twominutes in order to prevent heataccumulation. When you switch off, fans in the enginecompartment may continue running for atime to cool the engine.Vehicles with turbochargedengineAfter running at high engine speeds or highengine loads, operate the engine briefly ata low load or run in neutral for approx.30 seconds before switching off in order toprotect the turbocharger.Save energy –more miles / kilometresPlease observe the running-in hints on theprevious page and the tips for energysaving on the following pages.Good, technically correct and economicaldriving ensures maximum durability andperformance for your vehicle.OverrunThe fuel supply is automatically shut offduring overrun, e.g. when the vehicle isbeing driven down long gradients or duringbraking. To enable the overrun cut-off tocome into action, do not accelerate ordeclutch during overrun.Engine rpmDrive in a low engine speed range for eachgear as much as possible.Warming upRun the engine warm, do not allow it to“tick over” when started from cold. Speedshould be moderate until the engine hasreached operating temperature. After a cold start, Tecshift 3 do not shiftinto higher gears until higher enginespeeds have been reached. This allows thecatalytic converter to quickly reach thetemperature required for optimumpollutant reduction.Correct gear selectionTransmission in neutral and withoutrevving in the lower gears. Stop-and-gotraffic and driving at a speed too high forthe selected gear or transmission ratioincreases wear and fuel consumption.Change downWhen decreasing speed shift down into thenext lowest gear. Do not slip the clutch witha high-revving engine. This is especiallyimportant when hill climbing.Clutch operationAlways depress the clutch pedal hard tothe floor to prevent shifting difficulties andtransmission damage. There must be nomats in the area of the pedals. When driving do not use the pedal as afootrest; this will cause substantial clutchwear.PedalsDo not place any objects in the footwellwhich could slip under the pedals andinhibit the pedal travel. To ensure the pedal travel is uninhibited, there must be no mats in the area of thepedals.Battery care whilst drivingWhen driving slowly or when the vehicle isstationary, e.g. in slow urban traffic, stop-and-go traffic or traffic jams, turn off allunnecessary electrical loads wherepossible (e.g. heated rear window, heatedseats).Declutch when starting in order to relievethe strain on the starter and battery.
