60Maintenance Instructions CHECKING/SERVICINGMower Deck Gearbox Oil SealsThe mower deck gearbox seals should be inspectedevery 25 hours for evidence of oil leaking; particu-larly the lower oil seal on the blade drive gearbox. This seal is protected by the trash guard on the bladehub and seal protector plate on the housing, but isstill vulnerable to seal damage due to operating inan adverse environment. The mower blade must beremoved for inspection of the seal, so it is recom-mended to inspect the gearbox seals when bladesare removed for sharpening. If an oil leak is not-ed, the seal should be replaced and the gearboxassembly relubricated. Refer to LUBRICATION forMower Deck Gearbox Lubrication in this section.Spark PlugsEvery 200 hours of operation, remove the sparkplugs, inspect, clean, and reset the gap (or replacewith new plugs). Before removing the spark plugs, clean the area around the base of the plugs to keepdirt and debris out of the engine. Clean spark plugswith a wire brush. DO NOT use an abrasive grit typecleaner. If the electrodes are burned short or pitted, replace plugs with Champion‚ type RC12YC (orequivalent). Check spark plug gap with a wire-typefeeler gauge and set the gap at 0.030 in. (0.76 mm).Reinstall and tighten to between 18 and 22 ft-lb(24.4 to 29.8 N·m).Fuel Lines and ClampsEvery year, inspect the fuel supply line from thetank to engine for deterioration or damage. Also, inspect the fuel line clamps for tightness. Goodpreventive maintenance calls for complete replace-ment of fuel lines and clamps every two (2) years.Engine StarterYearly or every 500 hours disassemble and cleanthe solenoid shift starter. Refer to the Kohler ServiceManual for this procedure or contact an authorizedKohler engine dealer to perform this service.Blade Brake ActionWARNINGIt is important to check and maintain bladebrake action for safe operation of the ma-chine.Check the function of the cutter blade brake (andblower brake on GHS models) by engaging theblade clutch (PTO), operating the engine at full throt-tle, then disengaging the clutch and measuring howquickly the blades stop. Watch the rotation of theblade drive shaft and blower pulley as a visual indi-cation that movement has stopped. If the brake isworking properly, all rotation will stop five (5)seconds after disengagement of the clutch. If thebrake system malfunctions - blades do not stop infive (5) seconds - adjust or repair the brake beforeoperating the mower. Contact your Walker dealerfor this service or refer to the Walker Service Manu-al.Safety Switch SystemWARNINGIt is important to check and maintain thesafety switch system for safe operation ofthe machine. There are three (3) safety interlock switches on thetractor; Seat Switch, FSC Neutral - Park Switch, andPTO Switch.NOTE: There is a 1 to 1-1/2 second time delay func-tion on the seat switch to avoid engine power inter-ruption when driving over bumps. If any of the following conditions occur during start-ing or operating, a safety interlock switch may bemalfunctioning. Contact your Walker dealer for trou-bleshooting and/or replacement.• With an operator in the seat, the engine starts withthe Forward Speed Control (FSC) and/or the PTOengaged.
