Operating Instructions31NOTE: Smooth action on the steering leverswill produce smooth mower operation. Remem-ber to keep the engine and ground speed slowuntil learning the control response.WARNINGWhen moving forward, DO NOT suddenlyput the tractor in reverse by rapidly pullingon the steering levers, especially when go-ing downhill, as this can lift the tractor tailwheel off the ground and set up a buckingmotion due to operator overcontrol. Ifbucking does occur, immediately stop thebucking action by pulling the ForwardSpeed Control (FSC) lever into the NEU-TRAL-PARK position.4. The FSC may be adjusted forward for fasterground speed and backward for slower groundspeed. When mowing, ground speed should beadjusted to match the load on the cutter blades,i.e., as the engine pulls down in heavy cutting, pull back on the FSC lever to reduce groundspeed. Adjusting ground speed helps maintaina balance between engine power and bladespeed for high-quality cutting action.5. Stop ground travel by pulling both steering le-vers backward to the NEUTRAL-PARK position(trac tor not moving) and then moving the FSClever to the NEUTRAL-PARK position.NOTE: If the tractor creeps forward or back-ward with the FSC lever in the NEUTRAL-PARKposition, the transmission control needs to beadjusted. Contact your Walker dealer.ENGAGING THE BLADE DRIVE1. Set the engine throttle at about 1/2 speed. DONOT attempt to engage the blade clutch athigh engine speeds. This will drastically short-en drive belt life. Use only moderate enginespeed when engaging the blade clutch.2. Push the blade clutch lever SLOWLY back toen gage the mower blades.CAUTIONAn operator presence switch (seat switch)will cause the engine to stop if the bladeclutch is engaged and the operator is not inthe seat. The function of this switch shouldbe checked by the operator raising off theseat and engaging the blade clutch; the en-gine should stop. If the switch is not work-ing, it should be repaired or replaced be-fore operating the mower. DO NOTdisconnect the safety switches; they arefor the operator’s protection.IMPORTANT: DO NOT engage the blade clutchwhen transporting the mower across drives, side-walks, loose materials, etc. DO NOT engage theblade clutch with the PTO shaft disconnected(the mower deck removed from tractor).EngagedPositionBlade Clutch EngagedDisengagedPositionBlade Clutch Disengaged
