Operating Instructions32CAUTIONIf the cutting blades strike a stationary ob-ject while mowing, stop the mower imme-diately, disconnect the spark plug wire, liftthe deck, and inspect the deck and bladesthoroughly for damage. Make sure that theblade timing has not been disturbed (theblades should be at 90 degrees to eachother). Refer to REPLACING/REPAIRINGthe Blade Overload Shear Bolts in Maintenance Instructions if blades are out of time. Also, make sure the blade retaining nutsare torqued to 60 lb·ft (81 N·m).STOPPING THE MACHINE1. Pull the steering levers to the NEUTRAL-PARKposi tion and then move the FSC lever backwardto the NEUTRAL-PARK position.2. Slow the engine to idle; put the throttle in theIDLE position.3. Disengage the blade clutch.IMPORTANT: DO NOT disengage the bladeclutch with high engine speed (above 1/2 throt-tle) since the brake action on the blade drive willcause increased wear of the PTO Drive Belt.WARNINGA brake stops the cutter blades (andblower on GHS equipped models) fromfreewheeling within five (5) seconds afterdisengaging the clutch. If the brake sys-tem malfunctions and the blades do notstop within five (5) seconds, the brakeshould be adjusted or repaired before op-erating the mower. Contact your Walkerdealer.4. Turn the ignition switch OFF.WARNINGRemove the key from the ignition switchwhen leaving the mower unattended. Thiswill prevent children and inexperiencedoperators from starting the engine.5. Engage the parking brake. Also, engaging theparking brake is recommended when stoppingor parking the machine in a confined space withlittle tolerance for movement.IMPORTANT: The hydrostatic transmissionslock to prevent the mower from rolling freely withthe engine stopped. However, if the mower isparked on a slope, it is necessary to ENGAGEthe parking BRAKE to prevent the mower fromcreeping. This is due to a small amount of slip-page in the hydrostatic transmissions, especiallywhen transmission fluid is warm.ADJUSTING CUTTING HEIGHTWARNINGThe engine must be stopped before ad-justing cutting height. Disengage the bladeclutch (PTO), stop the engine, and removethe ignition key. Wait for all movement tostop before getting off the seat.Cutting height is adjusted by positioning the four (4)re tainer hitch pins in a series of seven vertical holeson the deck support pins. Lift handles have beenpro vided on each end of the deck to assist in raisingthe deck while positioning the hitch pins. Cuttingheights range from 1 in. (25 mm) [top holes] to4 in. (102 mm) [bottom holes] in 1/2 in. (13 mm)incre ments.
