D o w n l o a d i n g F o n t sC h a p t e r 4 : U s i n g F o n t sv 4-13Temporary fonts are PCL fonts downloaded for a particularprint job. As soon as the print job is finished, the fonts arecleared from memory. They must be downloaded for eachprint job that uses them. Downloading may have an impacton performance, depending on the number of fonts beingdownloaded. As a result, the print job using downloadedfonts may take longer than one using resident fonts. As an example, when you print a mostly-text document in aresident font, printing time is optimal. If you print that same document using a downloaded font, thetime to print the first page is substantially longer than it wasfor your resident-font document. The remaining pages alsotake longer to print than those of the resident-font document. For optimal performance, use resident fonts wheneverapplicable since they do not require downloading time.Permanently downloaded fonts are PCL fonts downloaded inthe same way as temporary fonts, but they remaindownloaded for all print jobs until the printer is powered off. They are permanent only as long as the printer is on.Similar to resident fonts or those on font cards, permanentlydownloaded fonts reduce the processing time for a print jobthat uses them. The distinction is that permanentlydownloaded fonts occupy printer memory that might be usedotherwise.Temporary andPermanent FontsNoteWUG-CH04 Page 13 Black,Cyan Sunday, January 22, 1995 8:27 PM
