S OLVING PROBLEMS 5.195Common Linux ProblemsProblem Possible Cause and SolutionI can’t change settings inthe configuration tool. You need to have administrator privileges to be able toaffect global settings.I am using the KDEdesktop but theconfiguration tool andLLPR won’t start.Maybe you do not have the GTK libraries installed. Theseusually come with most Linux distributions, but you mayhave to install them manually. Refer to your distribution’sinstallation manual for more details about installingadditional packages.I just installed thispackage but can’t findentries in the KDE/Gnome menus. Some versions of the KDE or GNOME desktopenvironments may require that you restart your sessionfor the changes to take effect.I get a “Some options arenot selected” errormessage while editing theprinter settings. Some printers have conflicting settings, meaning thatsome settings for two options can’t be selected at thesame time. When you change a setting and the PrinterPackage detects such a conflict, the conflicting option ischanged to a “No Choice” value, and you have to choosean option that does not conflict before being able to submitthe changes.I can’t make a printer thesystem default.• In some conditions, it may not be possible to change thedefault queue. This happens with some variants ofLPRng, especially on recent RedHat systems that use the‘printconf’ database of queues.• When using printconf, the /etc/printcap file isautomatically refreshed from the database of printersmanaged by the system (usually through the ‘printtool’command), and the queues in /etc/printcap.local areappended to the resulting file. since the default queue inLPRng is defined as the first queue in /etc/printcap,therefore it is not possible for the Xerox Printer Packageto change the default when some queues have otherwisebeen defined using printtool.• LPD systems identify the default queue as the onenamed ‘lp’. Thus if there is already a queue by this name, and if it doesn’t have any alias, then you won’t be able tochange the default. To work around this, you can eitherdelete the queue, or rename it by manually editing the /etc/printcap file.
