Page 96 FT-950 OPERATING M ANUALSection 97.401(d) of the regulations governing amateur radio in the United States permit emergency amateur communica-tions on the spot frequency of 5167.5 kHz by stations in (or within 92.6 km of) the state of Alaska. This frequency is onlyto be used when the immediate safety of human life and/or property are threatened, and is never to be used for routinecommunications. The FT-950 includes the capability for transmission and reception on 5167.5 kHz under such emergency conditions via theMenu system. To activate this feature:1. Press the [MENU] button to enter the Menu mode.2. Rotate the [SELECT] knob to select Menu item “118118118118118TGEN EMRGNCYTGEN EMRGNCYTGEN EMRGNCYTGEN EMRGNCYTGEN EMRGNCY”.ADVICE:Press the [SELECT] knob momentarily to toggle theMenu item display between “118 TGEN118 TGEN118 TGEN118 TGEN118 TGEN” and“EMRGNCYEMRGNCYEMRGNCYEMRGNCYEMRGNCY”.3. Rotate the [CLAR/VFO-B] knob to select “EnAEnAEnAEnAEnA (En-able).”4. Press and hold in the [MENU] button for one secondto save the new setting and exit to normal operation.Emergency communication on this spot frequency isnow possible.5. Press the [V/M] button, as necessary, to enter theMemory mode. Press the [MCH] button, then rotatethe [CLAR/VFO-B] knob to select the emergencychannel (“EUSEUSEUSEUSEUS”), which is found between channels“US5US5US5US5US5” and “0101010101”).NOTE: The receive-mode CLARIFIER functions normallywhile using this frequency, but variation of the trans-mit frequency is not possible. Activation of “118 TGEN118 TGEN118 TGEN118 TGEN118 TGENEMRGNCYEMRGNCYEMRGNCYEMRGNCYEMRGNCY” does not enable any other out of amateurband capability on the transceiver. The full specifica-tions of the FT-950 are not necessarily guaranteed onthis frequency, but power output and receiver sensitiv-ity should be fully satisfactory for the purpose of emer-gency communication. If you wish to disable operation capability on the AlaskaEmergency Frequency, repeat the above procedures, but set “118 TGEN EMRGNCY118 TGEN EMRGNCY118 TGEN EMRGNCY118 TGEN EMRGNCY118 TGEN EMRGNCY” to “diSdiSdiSdiSdiS” in step 3. In an emergency, note that a half-wave dipole cut forthis frequency should be approximately 45’3” on eachleg (90’6” total length). Emergency operation on5167.5 kHz is shared with the Alaska-Fixed Service. This transceiver is not authorized for operation, underthe FCC’s Part 87, for aeronautical communications.OPERATION ON ALASKA EMERGENCY FREQUENCY: 5167.5 KHZ (U.S. V ERSION O NLY)[V/M] Button [MCH] Button[CLAR/VFO-B] Knob[CLAR/VFO-B] Knob[MENU] Button[SELECT] Knob
