20Care and cleaningBefore cleaning always allow the applianceto cool down before switching off at theelectricity supply.Cleaning materials• Before using any cleaning materials on yourappliance, check that they are suitable andthat their use is recommended by themanufacturer.• Cleaners that contain bleach should not beused as they may dull the surface finishes.Harsh abrasives and scourers should alsobe avoided.Cleaning the outside of theappliance• Do not use abrasive cleaning materials e.g.abrasive cream cleaners, wire wool pads orscourers on painted or printed finishes asdamage may occur. Regularly wipe over thecontrol panel, control knobs, handles, doorsand appliance sides using a soft cloth andhot soapy water. To prevent streaking, finishwith a soft cloth.• Stainless Steel cream cleaners are abrasiveand should be avoided as they may dull thesurface finish. Any spillage on thestainless steel finish must be wiped offimmediately.Do not attempt to remove any of the controlknobs from the appliance as this may causedamage and is a safety hazard.Cleaning the hob• Clean the hob using a mild abrasive.• Take care not to damage the sparkelectrodes. If the spark electrodes aredamaged the burners will not light. You canremove the pan supports, burner caps andburner crowns to clean them. Again takecare not to damage the spark electrodes.• Clean the burner crowns and pan supportsby soaking them in very hot soapy water.• Aluminium based saucepans can leave shinymetal marks on the pan supports. You canremove any stubborn stains by scouring witha soap impregnated steel wool pad. If youlook after the burner crowns and pansupports in this way they will stay reasonablyclean. However the surface will dull withtime. After cleaning the appliance parts, drythem thoroughly before you put them back.When replacing hob burnerparts1. Crown to body. (Do not try to force the crownon to the body). Make sure that the hole inthe crown is over the electrode. Check thatthe location pegs sit in the slots in the body.When the crown is in this position let it fallfreely on to the body. Check that the crowncan be moved slightly from side to side.2. Cap to crown. Place cap centrally on the topof crown (enamel side up). Move sidewaysand front to back to check the cap is properlyfitted.3. Check for ignition. If a burner will not lightthen you need to check the crown and cappositions.
