32 C HAPTER 7: I NSTALLATION FOR DOSCard Services software, which is usually loaded on computersat the factory, is a software utility that coordinates card accessto sockets and system resources, including device drivers, utilities, and application programs. To manage the computer’sbasic hardware configuration, Card Services automaticallysets the I/O base address, interrupt request level, and the CISmemory base address for PC and PCMCIA cards.Verify whether Card Services is installed on your computerby checking the boot screen or looking in the CONFIG.SYSfile. For some versions of Card Services, the computer’sboot screen may display the following line:Card Services InstalledIf Card Services is not displayed on the boot screen, checkthe device section of the CONFIG.SYS file. If Card Services isinstalled, one device statement will list Card Services, CardServ, or CS on the device line and usually have a CS or SS inthe driver name. Consult your Card Services documentationfor more information. If your computer does not have Card Services, or if youchoose not to install Card Services, you must use the pointenabler to run the LAN+Modem card. The point enablerwill not support another PC Card in the same computer. If you are having problems with Card Services or you wantto disable it to save memory, you can reboot while pressing[F8]. This skips the startup process that loads Card Services.Avoiding Memory Manager ConflictsIf you do not have Card Services, you may experienceconflicts with the memory manager installed in yourcomputer. You must configure the memory manager sothat it does not interfere with the memory used by theLAN+Modem card. The LAN+Modem card requires 4K for the CIS memory fornormal operation (when you are running diagnostics, thePC Card needs 8K of memory). The LAN+Modem card searches the upper memory, findsthe 4K block that has been excluded, and uses this area forstoring the contents of the CIS memory. For this reason, you do not need to exclude a specific range, as long as it iscontiguous.
