9A656-04 and 9A600 Configuration Guide1-3Overview1.3 OVERVIEWThe 9A656-04 is a 4.5 Gbps, single slot module for the SmartSwitch 9500 chassis. Up to fourATM Network Interface Modules (ANIMs) of any type can be installed in the 9A656-04 toprovide front panel connectivity to the network. Cabletron Systems ANIMs can support up to622 Mbps of bandwidth per port. The 9A656-04 switches data between the ANIMs and theCell Transfer Matrix (CTM) backplane in the SmartSwitch 9500 chassis. This allows forhigh-speed switching of data between modules installed in the same chassis that connect tothe CTM backplane. The CTM provides a dedicated 1.6 Gbps link between each 9A656-04module.The 9A600 is a 5.4 Gbps, single slot module for the SmartSwitch 9500 chassis. Up to fourATM Network Interface Modules (ANIMs) of any type can be installed in the 9A600 toprovide front panel connectivity to the network. Cabletron Systems ANIMs can support up to622 Mbps of bandwidth per port. The 9A600 switches data between the ANIMs and the otherATM devices to which it is connected. Unlike the 9A656-04, the 9A600 does not connect tothe CTM backplane.1.3.1 Distributed Management FrameworkThrough its distributed management framework, the 9A656-04 allows all the modules in thechassis to appear as a single entity, managed through a single IP address. The individualmodules are transparent to the network manager and management applications. A fully loadedSmartSwitch 9500 chassis appears as a single switch, with one IP address.1.3.2 ATM Forum SpecificationsThe 9A656-04 is fully compliant with the following ATM Forum specifications:• Intergrated Local management Interface (ILMI) 4.0 for autoconfiguration.• UNI v3.0 /3.1 and v4.0 for signalling.• ATM Forum P-NNI 1.0 and IISP 3.0/3.1/4.0 routing specifications for establishingconnections between ATM switches.• LANE 1.0 for the management LAN Emulation Client.• TM 4.0NOTE“Throughout this manual, it is important to understand that the 9A656-04 and 9A600are part of an overall “system” which is the SmartSwitch 9500. With one or more9A656-04 or 9A600s installed, the chassis becomes a single switch, with all boardsinstalled being a part of that single switch, not a separate component.When this manual refers to the “system” it is referring to a SmartSwitch 9500chassis with one or more 9A656-04 or 9A600 modules installed.
