Maintenance Footnotes† The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or theCalifornia Air Resources Board has determined that thefailure to perform this maintenance item will not nullifythe emission warranty or limit recall liability prior tothe completion of the vehicle’s useful life. We, however,urge that all recommended maintenance services beperformed at the indicated intervals and themaintenance be recorded.# Lubricate the front suspension, ball joints, steeringlinkage, transmission shift linkage and parkingbrake cable guides. Ball joints should not be lubricatedunless their temperature is 10°F (-12°C) or higher,or they could be damaged.(a) Visually inspect brake lines and hoses for properhook-up, binding, leaks, cracks, chafing, etc. Inspectdisc brake pads for wear and rotors for surfacecondition. Inspect other brake parts, including calipers,parking brake, etc.(b) Visually inspect front and rear suspension andsteering system for damaged, loose or missing parts,signs of wear or lack of lubrication. Inspect powersteering lines and hoses for proper hook-up, binding,leaks, cracks, chafing, etc.(c) Visually inspect hoses and have them replaced if theyare cracked, swollen or deteriorated. Inspect all pipes,fittings and clamps; replace with genuine GM parts asneeded. To help ensure proper operation, a pressure testof the cooling system and pressure cap and cleaning theoutside of the radiator and air conditioning condenser isrecommended at least once a year.(d) Visually inspect wiper blades for wear or cracking.Replace blade inserts that appear worn or damagedor that streak or miss areas of the windshield.(e) Make sure the safety belt reminder light and all yourbelts, buckles, latch plates, retractors and anchoragesare working properly. Look for any other loose ordamaged safety belt system parts. If you see anythingthat might keep a safety belt system from doing itsjob, have it repaired. Have any torn or frayed safety beltsreplaced. Also look for any opened or broken airbagcoverings, and have them repaired or replaced.(The airbag system does not need regular maintenance.)(f) Lubricate all key lock cylinders, hood latchassemblies, secondary latch, pivots, spring anchor,release pawl, hood hinges, body door hinges, rearcompartment hinges and any folding seat hardware.More frequent lubrication may be required whenexposed to a corrosive environment. Applying siliconegrease on weatherstrips with a clean cloth will makethem last longer, seal better and not stick or squeak.See Weatherstrips on page 5-87.6-7
