EXTERNAL BATTERY CABINET INSTALLATIONEaton FERRUPS FE/QFE UPS (500 VA–18 kVA) Installation Guide 164201403 Rev Bwww.eaton.com/powerquality58Installing and Connecting the Batteries1. Use the battery installation diagram that came with the UPSbatteries and cabinet as you follow the steps below.2. Place the external battery cabinet or rack as close as possible to theFERRUPS UPS. If the batteries will be further from the unit than thestandard cables allow, contact your service representative or yourlocal distributor for assistance. The external battery cabinet or rack should be well ventilated andaway from direct sunlight or other heat source. Ensure that the flooris level and can support the weight of the batteries, the cabinet orrack, and any other necessary equipment. Your Eaton salescoordinator can tell you the size and weight of external batteries. The temperature should be below 77°F (25°C) for the best batteryperformance. Batteries will be less efficient at temperatures below65°F (18°C). High temperatures will reduce battery life. Typically, atabout 95°F (35°C) battery life will be half of what it would be at anormal temperature of 77°F (25°C). At about 113°F (45°C), batterylife will be one-fourth of normal. The batteries should be as close as possible to the UPS to reduceDC wiring costs and improve battery performance.NOTE If you are installing the batteries in a place where there may be seismic activity, youshould anchor the UPS and external battery cabinets to the floor. Anchoring kits are availablefrom Eaton.3. Wherever conductors may be exposed to physical damage, youmust protect the conductors in accordance with National ElectricalCode ANSI/NFPA 70-1993. This includes battery cables betweenthe UPS and the external battery cabinet and cables betweenexternal battery cabinets (if you have more than one).We suggest routing battery cables through flexible conduit. Formodels with a removable DC plug at the UPS end of the cables, wesuggest routing the cables through the conduit to within about 12(30.5 cm) of the UPS because the connector or plug does notconnect to flexible conduit. Install flexible conduit for battery cablesaccording to local or national code.
