This includes the following steps:1. Verify that the panelboard is not energized.2. Visually inspect the panelboard and remove allforeign materials, such as, tools, scraps of wire andother debris from all panelboard sections.3. Remove and discard all packing materials andtemporary shipping braces from the panelboard.4. Any accumulation of dust and dirt should beremoved with a vacuum cleaner. Use a lint-free clothto remove dust and dirt on other surfaces. Neveruse compressed air as this may blow contaminantsinto electrical and/or electronic components. Neveruse solvents or other chemicals to clean surfaces orcomponents.5. Visually inspect all ventilation points to ensure thatthere is no blockage or debris. Remove all debris, ifpresent.6. Verify all field wire connections have the propertorque per instructions on the panelboard and oncomponents.7. All factory connections are made utilizing calibratedpower tools. However, vibrations do occur intransit and handling. Verify factory connectionsby checking at least 10% of the total factoryconnections for tightness. If this spot checkreveals loose connections, proceed to check allfactory connections. These connections include bushardware connections, circuit breaker terminals, andother connections, including the incoming terminals.8. Visually inspect panelboard insulators, bus barand conductors for damage. DO NOT ENERGIZE IFDAMAGE IS FOUND. Contact Eaton.Circuit BreakersCircuit breakers are typically shipped in either the open(OFF) or “tripped” position. Manually close, and then openthese devices to ensure they are functioning properly. Atthe completion of this process, be sure that the circuitbreaker is in the “OFF” or “tripped” position. Inspect circuitbreakers for any visible damage. If damage is found, DO NOT ENERGIZE the panelboard.Contact Eaton.Overcurrent Devices with Ground Fault ProtectionThis panelboard may contain overcurrent devices withGround Fault Protection (GFP). The National Electrical Codemay require ground fault protection for this installation.Other GFP applications may be used including multi-levelground fault protection. Refer to the panelboard drawingsand electrical construction drawings for usage andplacement within the panelboard.Ground fault protection may be installed integral toovercurrent device(s) or as a separate system. Separatesystems typically are connected to a shunt trippingmechanism on an overcurrent device.Visibly inspect connections on GFP systems, neutralsensors and ground connections. Refer to manufacturer’sinstructions for details. The National Electrical Code, Article 230-95 requires thatany GFP systems must be performance tested when firstinstalled. Conduct tests in accordance with the approvedinstructions provided with the equipment. A written testreport must be available for the Authority Having Jurisdiction(AHJ). Refer to the National Electrical Code for specificrequirement or contact Eaton. Field-testing of ground faultprotection must follow instructions provided with eachGFP device. Due to the varied types of GFP systems, testing instructions can vary from device to device. Referto the specific testing instructions for each device. Refer toinstruction leaflets that are shipped with each panelboardcontaining GFP or contact Eaton.Preparing Panelboard for Insulation/MeggerTestingDevices Installed with Control Power FusingDevices, which require control power fusing, can be easilydamaged beyond repair if not disconnected during thetesting phase. These devices include, but are not limitedto, customer metering equipment, electronic breaker tripunits, motor operators and communication equipment. Priorto testing the panelboard, turn off all control power devicesin the panelboard to prevent damage to components. Thecontrol power may be turned off by utilizing the controlpower switch or by removing the fuses. Components thatuse power supplies include customer metering and certainbreaker accessories and these must be isolated beforetesting.WARNINGTO PREVENT DAMAGE TO GROUND FAULT CONTROLCIRCUITS, METERING CIRCUITS, TRANSIENT VOLTAGESURGE PROTECTION (TVSS) OR OTHER CONTROLCIRCUITS, WHENMEGGERING PANELBOARD, ISOLATE CIRCUITS FROMPANELBOARD SYSTEM BEFORE BEGINNING THE MEGGEROPERATION. BE SURE TO RECONNECT THOSE CIRCUITSAFTER MEGGER TESTS ARE COMPLETED.NOTEe: SOME GROUND FAULT CIRCUITS MAY NOT BEFUSED, THEREFORE ISOLATION OF THOSE CIRCUITSREQUIRES DISCONNECTING WIRING FROM BUS BARS. |
