InstallationS801+ Soft Starter MN03900002E—November 2012 www.eaton.com 19Control Wiring Application NotesCAUTIONOnly apply 24 Vdc to the control terminal block. Controlwiring is 22–12 AWG (0.33–4.0 mm 2 ). Failure to follow thiscaution may result in damage to the control circuit.1. Connect 24 Vdc Supply positive to Terminal “+” using aminimum wire of 14 AWG (2.5 mm 2).2. Connect 24 Vdc Supply negative to Terminal “–“ using aminimum wire of 14 AWG (2.5 mm 2).3. 24 Vdc Control voltage must not exceed 30 Vdc toprevent hardware damage.4. 24 Vdc Control voltage must not fall below 18 Vdc.Using a Supplemental Line ContactorIn some installations, it may be necessary to use anelectromagnetic contactor in series with the soft starter. Inthis case, it is recommended that the contactor be placed onthe load side of the soft starter. The contactor must beclosed prior to starting the soft starter and remain closeduntil the Soft Starter has been stopped to ensure proper softstarter and system operation. If an electromagnetic contactor is used on the line side of thesoft starter, additional control circuitry must be supplied bythe user when using edge control to ensure the line power issupplied to the soft starter before control power is applied. Ifthis sequence is not followed, the soft starter will fault oneither a phase loss or zero voltage-crossing fault. If it is desired to place an electromagnetic contactor on theline side of the soft starter, Eaton recommends using levelsense option. With level sense, no additional control circuitryis required. A start can be completed when the line power issupplied to the unit after the control power, providing theReset Mode parameter is set to AUTO and the unit has aReady light status with 24 Vdc on the Start terminal. If the AUTO Reset Mode setting is used, CAUTION mustbe exercised to assure that any restart occurs in the safemanner.
