Three instantaneous overcurrent elements are used to identify a previously de-energized line that hasbeen closed onto a fault which could be due to maintenance grounds that have not been removed. Faults other than close-in faults can be identified satisfactorily by the distance elements which initially will be self or faulted phase polarized andthen become memory polarized when a satisfactory memory signal is available.
