5-4 GPS 175/GNX 375 Pilot’s Guide 190-02207-02 Rev. 1Hazard Awareness5.1.2 Per FAA TSO-C157bFIS-B information may be used for pilot planning decisions focused on updating thepilot's awareness of the dynamic flight environment; including avoiding areas ofinclement weather that are beyond visual range and pilot near-term decisions wherepoor visibility precludes visual acquisition of inclement weather. FIS-B weather andNAS status information may be used as follows:a. To promote pilot awareness of ownship location with respect to reportedweather, including hazardous meteorological conditions; NAS status indicatorsto enhance pilot planning decisions; and pilot near-term decision-making.b. To cue the pilot to communicate with Air Traffic Control, Flight Service Stationspecialist, operator dispatch, or airline operations control center for general andmission critical meteorological information, NAS status conditions, or both.FIS-B information, including weather information, NOTAMs, and TFR areas, areintended for the sole purpose of assisting in long-/near-term planning anddecision making. The system lacks sufficient resolution and updating capabilitynecessary for aerial maneuvering associated with immediate decisions. Inextreme scenarios, the oldest weather radar data on the display can be up to 15to 20 minutes older than the display’s age indication for that weather radardata. Therefore, do not attempt to use FIS-B weather information to maneuverthe aircraft at minimum safe distances from hazardous weather.FIS-B information must not be used in lieu of a standard preflight briefing.c. [Displaying FIS-B weather using GDL 88, or GTX 345 Class 1 transceivers]FIS-B uplink is a subscription-free FIS broadcast managed by FAA SBS. It providesan FAA approved source for METAR, TAF, WINDS, PIREPs, NEXRAD, AIRMET,SIGMET, and TFR information, and is subject to the broadcast range limits forthese products.FIS-B uplink is not an FAA approved source for NOTAMs.5.1.3 NOTAM 30-Day LimitationNOTAMs received via FIS-B may not be a complete listing. Active NOTAMs areremoved from the FIS-B data stream 30 days after issuance. Before flight, review allnecessary aeronautical and meteorological information from official sources. For more information, consult AC 00-63.
