Chapter 4. Installing Options 25Home PNA network adapterSome models might have a Home Phoneline Network Alliance network adapter withan integrated V.90 modem. In addition to its modem function, this adapter enablesyou to use the telephone wiring in your home for peer-to-peer networking. To use theHome PNA Network adapter, you must install the Intel AnyPoint™ software fromthe Software Selections CD. Each computer on the home PNA network must have aPNA network adapter and the associated software installed. For information aboutusing the PNA network adapter or the AnyPoint software, refer to the AnyPointdocumentation (provided with models that come with PNA network adapters only).Connect each computer on a home PNA network directly to a telephone-line wallconnector. If you have more computers than telephone-line wall connectors in a room,use a telephone splitter at the wall connector.Actual network transfer speeds depend on many factors, such as home wiringconfiguration, and are often less than the maximum possible.Serial connectors Used to attach an external modem, serial printer, or other devicethat uses a 9-pin serial connector.Parallel connector Used to attach a parallel printer, parallel scanner, or any otherdevice that requires a 25-pin parallel connection.USB connectors Used to attach a device that requires a Universal Serial Bus (USB)connection, such as a USB scanner or USB printer. If you havemore than four USB devices, you can purchase a USB hub, whichyou can use to connect additional USB devices.Ethernet connector Used to attach an Ethernet cable that uses an Ethernet connector.Note: To operate the computer within FCC Class A or Class Blimits, use a category 5 Ethernet cable.Audio line out connector Used to send audio signals from the computer to external devices,such as powered stereo speakers (speakers with built-inamplifiers), headphones (greater than 18 ohms), multimediakeyboards, or the audio line in connector on a stereo system orother external recording device.Audio line in connector Used to receive audio signals from an external audio device, suchas a stereo system. When you attach an external audio device, acable is connected between the audio line out connector of thedevice and the audio line in connector of the computer.Microphone connector Used to attach a microphone to your computer when you want torecord voice or other sounds on the hard disk using speech-recognition software.
