If you have other devices to install or remove, do so now. Otherwise, go to“Completing the MAX5 installation” on page 81.Installing a MAX5 memory moduleThe following notes describe the types of DIMMs that the MAX5 memory expansionmodule supports and other information that you must consider when you installDIMMs.v The MAX5 supports a maximum of 32 DIMMs (single-rank, dual-rank, orquad-rank).Note: To determine the type of a DIMM, see the label on the DIMM. Theinformation on the label is in the format xxxxx nRxxx PC3-xxxxx-xx-xx-xxx. Thenumeral in the sixth numerical position indicates whether the DIMM is single-rank(n=1) or dual-rank (n=2).v The DIMM options that are available for the MAX5 are 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, and16 GB (when available).v The MAX5 supports a minimum of 4 GB and a maximum of 512 GB of systemmemory.v When you populate DIMMs in the MAX5, populate the larger capacity DIMMsfirst; then the smaller capacity DIMMs. See Table 10 on page 76 fornon-mirroring mode DIMM population sequence and Table 11 on page 77 formemory-mirroring mode DIMM population sequence.v The MAX5 provides eight memory ports (memory channels) and each memoryport supports up to four DIMMs. Do not mix DIMMs with x4 technology (DIMMswith DRAMs that are organized with 4 data lanes) and x8 technology (DIMMswith DRAMs that are organized with 8 data lanes) in the same memory port.Table 8. This is not supported on the MAX5. Thefollowing table lists the DIMM connectors for each bank of eight DIMMs that areon the memory ports within the same memory controller.Table 9.
