Chapter 5. Removing and replacing server componentsReplaceable components are of four types:v Consumable Parts: Purchase and replacement of consumable parts(components, such as batteries and printer cartridges, that have depletable life)is your responsibility. If IBM acquires or installs a consumable part at yourrequest, you will be charged for the service.v Tier 1 customer replaceable unit (CRU): Replacement of Tier 1 CRUs is yourresponsibility. If IBM installs a Tier 1 CRU at your request, you will be charged forthe installation.v Tier 2 customer replaceable unit: You may install a Tier 2 CRU yourself orrequest IBM to install it, at no additional charge, under the type of warrantyservice that is designated for your server.v Field replaceable unit (FRU): FRUs must be installed only by trained servicetechnicians.See Chapter 4, “Parts listing, Types 4255, 7945, and 7949 server,” on page 157 todetermine whether a component is a Tier 1 CRU, Tier 2 CRU, or FRU.For information about the terms of the warranty and getting service and assistance, see the Warranty Information document.Installation guidelinesAttention: Static electricity that is released to internal server components whenthe server is powered-on might cause the system to halt, which might result in theloss of data. To avoid this potential problem, always use an electrostatic-dischargewrist strap or other grounding system when removing or installing a hot-swapdevice.Before you remove or replace a component, read the following information:v Read the safety information that begins on page vii, the guidelines in “Workinginside the server with the power on” on page 171, and “Handling static-sensitivedevices” on page 171. This information will help you work safely.v When you install your new server, take the opportunity to download and applythe most recent firmware updates.Important: Some cluster solutions require specific code levels or coordinatedcode updates. If the device is part of a cluster solution, verify that the latest levelof code is supported for the cluster solution before you update the code. This stepwill help to ensure that any known issues are addressed and that your server isready to function at maximum levels of performance. To download firmwareupdates for your server, complete the following steps:1. Go to http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/.2. Under Product support, click System x.3. Under Popular links, click Software and device drivers.4.
