6. Reconnect the external cables; then, reconnect the power cords and turn on theperipheral devices and the server.Removing the system boardTo remove the system board, complete the following steps.1. Read the safety information that begins on page vii and “Installation guidelines”on page 169.2. Turn off the server, and disconnect all power cords and external cables.3. Pull the power supplies out of the rear of the server, just enough to disengagethem from the server.4. Remove the server cover (see “Removing the cover” on page 177).5. Remove the following components and place them on a static-protectivesurface for reinstallation:v The riser-card assemblies with adapters (see “Removing a PCI riser-cardassembly” on page 188)v The SAS riser-card and controller assembly (see “Removing the SASriser-card and controller assembly” on page 197)6. If an Ethernet adapter is installed in the server, remove it.7. If a virtual media key is installed in the server, remove it (see “Removing anIBM virtual media key” on page 185 for instructions).8. Remove the air baffles (see “Removing the DIMM air baffle” on page 180 and“Removing the microprocessor 2 air baffle” on page 178).Important: Before you remove the DIMMs, note which DIMMs are in whichconnectors. You must install them in the same configuration on thereplacement system board.9. Remove all DIMMs, and place them on a static-protective surface forreinstallation (see “Removing a memory module (DIMM)” on page 217).10. Remove the fans (see “Removing a hot-swap fan” on page 223).11. Disconnect all cables from the system board (see “Internal cable routing andconnectors” on page 172).Attention:v In the following step, do not allow the thermal grease to come in contactwith anything, and keep each heat sink paired with its microprocessor forreinstallation. Contact with any surface can compromise the thermal greaseand the microprocessor socket; a mismatch between the microprocessorand its original heat sink can require the installation of a new heat sink.v Disengage all latches, release tabs or locks on cable connectors when youdisconnect all cables from the system board. Please refer to “Internal cablerouting and connectors” on page 172 for more information. Failing to releasethem before removing the cables will damage the cable sockets on thesystem board. The cable sockets on the system board are fragile. Anydamage to the cable sockets may require replacing the system board.12. Remove each microprocessor heat sink and microprocessor; then, place themon a static-protective surface for reinstallation (see “Removing amicroprocessor and heat sink” on page 238).13. Push in and lift up the two system-board release latches on each side of thefan cage.Chapter 5. Removing and replacing server components 247
