d. Touch the static-protective package that contains the microprocessor to anyunpainted metal surface on the server. Then, remove the microprocessorfrom the package.Attention:v Handle the microprocessor carefully. Dropping the microprocessor duringinstallation or removal can damage the contacts.v Do not touch the microprocessor contacts; handle the microprocessor bythe edges only. Contaminants on the microprocessor contacts, such as oilfrom your skin, can cause connection failures between the contacts andthe socket.v Do not use excessive force when you press the microprocessor into thesocket.v Make sure that the microprocessor is oriented and aligned and positionedin the socket before you try to close the lever.MicroprocessorsocketMicroprocessorretainerMicroprocessorAlignment markse. Align the microprocessor with the socket (note the alignment mark and theposition of the notches); then, carefully place the microprocessor straightdown on the socket. Close the microprocessor bracket frame.Attention: The microprocessor fits only one way on the socket. You mustplace a microprocessor straight down on the socket to avoid damaging thepins on the socket. The pins on the socket are fragile. Any damage to thepins might require replacing the system board.f. Carefully close the microprocessor release lever to secure themicroprocessor in the socket.7. Install a heat sink on the microprocessor.Attention: Do not touch the thermal grease on the bottom of the heat sink orset down the heat sink after you remove the plastic cover. Touching the thermalgrease will contaminate it.a. Remove the screws (if installed) from the heat sink screw holes on thesystem board.b. Remove the plastic protective cover from the bottom of the heat sink.c. If the new heat sink did not come with thermal grease, apply thermal greaseon the microprocessor before you install the heat sink (see “Thermal grease”on page 67).d. Orient the heat sink so that the side with the number 1 on the label facesthe front of the server.e. Align the screws on the heat sink with the screw holes on the system board;then, place the heat sink on the microprocessor with the thermal-grease sidedown.66 IBM System x3755 M3 Type 7164: Installation and User’s Guide
