JBL SYNTHESIS SDP-45 Setup- 40 -SPEAKER SIZEIf you are using the SDP-45 with a JBL Synthesis Systemincluding the JBL Synthesis SDEC Digital EQ / Speaker Processor thenyou should always set the Speaker Size to small and the Crossover setto 80hz (default) for all speakers unless directed by Technical Support todo otherwise.Speaker configuration involves declaring the size such as Large, Smallor None (see SPEAKER SIZE menu) for the five categories of speakers:Front (Left and Right), Center, Surround (side surround), Back (rearsurround) and Subwoofer (in SUBWOOFER sub-menu).The Subwoofer output carries a combined (sum) contents of bassextracted from all the other speaker channels, for those speakers thatare declared as ―Small‖, and also includes the Low-Frequency Effectcontents (LFE) present optionally only in the multi-channel stream(labeled as 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1). Bass contents is defined as the portion of theaudio spectrum of frequencies from all the channels that are below thecross-over frequency (default is 80Hz), added up to the LFE channel (ifpresent). The cross-over frequency can be modified in the SOURCESETUPCROSSOVER Fc submenu, separately for the front speakers, center, surround and back. The LFE channel cannot be altered or cut offand the cross-over frequency setup or Xtra Bass setup does not affect it.Bass content carried through those channels where the speakers aredeclared as ―Large‖ is not re-routed through the Subwoofer. Instead it isoutput through those speakers directly. If Subwoofer is declared as notpresent, then the bass contents from all the channels will be re-routedthrough the large speakers only (if there are any), otherwise it will be cut-off. SDP-45 provides a single subwoofer channel.Parameter Possible SettingsFRONT LARGE, SMALLCENTER LARGE, SMALL, NONESURROUND LARGE, SMALL, NONEBACK 1 LARGE, 2 LARGE, 1 SMALL, 2 SMALL, NONESPEAKER LEVELIf you are using the SDP-45 with a JBL Synthesis Systemincluding the JBL Synthesis SDEC Digital EQ / Speaker Processor thenyou should always leave the Levels set to 0dB (default) for all speakersunless directed by Technical Support to do otherwise.YOU MUST ENTER THE SAME SETTINGS FOR EACH SOURCE ORREPEAT THIS PROCESS FOR EACH SOURCE WHEN THE SDP-45IS SET TO SOURCE INDIVIDUAL.Volume level corrections (from -12 to +12dB) can be entered for eachspeaker individually in the SPEAKER LEVEL screen. This level controlcan also be changed during the internal noise test as shown in theSYSTEM SETUPTEST screen, or by pressing the TEST button on theremote control.SETTING SPEAKER LEVEL USING THE INTERNAL NOISE TEST:The internal noise test allows you to set the levels of the speakers. Thenoise test is used to balance the speakers relative to each other.Note the following:You should use a Sound Pressure Level (SPL) meter tomanually calibrate output levels. An SPL meter is a device thatmeasures the relative loudness of the speakers to ensureaccurate output level calibration. SPL meters are available atRadio Shack.Output levels should be calibrated from the primary listeningposition by placing the SPL meter at the approximate locationwhere the listener‘s head will be during listening. The SUBWOOFER level will need to be adjusted higher then themain speakers. This is due to the roll-off that all SPL metershave built in to the microphone. Unless you are using a knownSPL meter with frequency response to below 30Hz do not set thelevels to the same as the Main Speakers. The SDP-45 will return to the main Volume Level when the testis exited.NOTENOTE
