15Blade TensionBlade tension is set with the blade tensionhandwheel (A, Figure 23) and is performedfollowing blade replacement and periodically as theblade stretches from use.Disconnect machine frompower source before making any adjustments.Referring to Figure 23:1. Set the blade tension by rotating thehandwheel according to the arrow directions inFigure 23.2. The gauge (B) indicates the approximatetension according to the width of the blade ininches. Initially, set the blade tension tocorrespond to the width of your blade. TheVBS-18MW comes with a 3/4" metal workingblade, so the tension should be set at 3/4" onthe metal working scale when using this blade.Note: A tension gauge can also be seen fromthe front of the saw through the wheel when theupper door is open.As you become familiar with the saw, you may findit necessary to change the blade tension from theinitial setting.Keep in mind that too little or too much bladetension can cause blade breakage and/or poorcutting performance.Tip: When the band saw is not being used, slightlyrelease the tension on the blade – this will prolongthe blade’s life. Make a note of the specific tensionsetting for that particular blade, as shown on thegauge (B). The tension can then be re-set quicklywhen band saw operations are resumed.Blade TrackingTracking refers to the position of the saw blade onthe wheels while the machine is in operation.Tracking has been factory-adjusted. However, itshould be checked occasionally including afterevery blade change.Disconnect machine frompower source before making any adjustments.Important: The blade must be properly tensionedbefore adjusting blade tracking (see previoussection). Make sure the blade guides and otherparts of the machine will not interfere with themovement of the blade. To inspect and adjust tracking, proceed as follows:Figure 231. Open upper front door to expose the wheel.Rotate the wheel clockwise by hand andobserve the position of the blade on the wheelthrough the window (E). The blade should rideupon the center of the wheel (Figure 24).2. If the blade tends to move toward the edge ofthe wheel, loosen the wing nut (D) and slightlyrotate the knob (C). Rotating the knobclockwise will cause the blade to move towardthe rear edge of the wheel. Rotating the knobcounterclockwise will cause the blade to movetoward the front edge of the wheel.Note: This adjustment is sensitive; perform it insmall increments and give the blade time toreact to the changes as you continue to rotatethe wheel.3. When the blade is tracking properly in thecenter of the wheel, re-tighten the wing nut (D).4. Close the upper front door.Figure 24
