7115 Volt OperationThe VBS-18MW band saw is wired from thefactory for 115 volt operation. The power cordhas a plug that looks like A, Figure 1, and isused in an outlet that looks like B, Figure 1. Atemporary adapter with a grounding ear securedwith a screw (C, Figure 1) may be used toconnect this plug to a two-pole receptacle if aproperly grounded outlet is not available. Thetemporary adapter should only be used until aproperly grounded outlet can be installed by aqualified electrician. This adapter is notapplicable in Canada. The green coloredgrounding ear, lug, or tsab, extending from theadapter, must be connected to a permanentground such as a properly grounded outlet box,as shown in C, Figure 1.Figure 1It is recommended that the Band Saw whenoperated at 115 volts, be connected to adedicated, minimum 30 amp circuit with a 30amp circuit breaker or time delay fuse. Localcodes take precedence over recommenda-tions.230 Volt OperationIf 230V, single phase operation is desired, thefollowing instructions must be followed:1. Disconnect machine from the power source.2. This band saw is supplied with four motorleads that are connected for 115V operation. For 230V operation, re-connect the leads asshown in the diagram inside the motorjunction box. The diagram is replicated onpage 40 of this manual.3. The 115V attachment plug supplied with theband saw must be replaced with a UL/CSAlisted plug suitable for 230V operation, similar to that shown in Figure 2. Contactyour local Authorized JET Service Center orqualified electrician for proper procedures toinstall the plug. The band saw must complywith all local and national codes after the230V plug is installed.4. The band saw with a 230V plug should onlybe connected to an outlet having the sameconfiguration (Figure 2). No adapter isavailable or should be used with the 230Vplug.Figure 2It is recommended that the Band Saw whenoperated at 230 volts, be connected to adedicated, minimum 15 amp circuit with a 15amp circuit breaker or time delay fuse. Localcodes take precedence over recommend-dations.Important: In all cases (115 or 230 volts), makecertain the receptacle in question is properlygrounded. If you are not sure, have a registeredelectrician check the receptacle.Extension cordsThe use of an extension cord is notrecommended for this band saw; try to positionthe machine within reach of the power supply. Ifan extension cord is necessary, make sure thecord rating is suitable for the amperage listed onthe machine’s motor plate. An undersize cordwill cause a drop in line voltage resulting in lossof power and overheating.Use the chart in Figure 3 as a general guide inchoosing the correct size cord. If in doubt, usethe next heavier gauge. The smaller the gaugenumber, the heavier the cord.Recommended Gauges (AWG) of Extension CordsAmpsExtension Cord Length *25feet50feet75feet100feet150feet200feet< 5 16 16 16 14 12 125 to 8 16 16 14 12 10 NR8 to 12 14 14 12 10 NR NR12 to 15 12 12 10 10 NR NR15 to 20 10 10 10 NR NR NR21 to 30 10 NR NR NR NR NR*based on limiting the line voltage drop to 5V at 150% of therated amperes.NR: Not Recommended.Figure 3
