39CHAPTER 8UNIX S ETUPS ETTING U P ON A U NIX S YSTEMHere we provide basic instructions for installing the printeron your UNIX system in Solaris 2.x and SCO. For additionalinformation, refer to your operating system administrationmanuals.Configuring the IP Address on the PrinterFirst the SuperScript color laser printer must be assigned anIP address and routing parameters. We suggest you use theinstructions in Chapter 3 for using the printer Operator Panelto set the Net (IP) Address.Setting Up Your Printing ModeUse these instructions to set up the printer for SCO OpenServer Enterprise 5.0 and Solaris 2.x.Installing the Printer in Your Systemlpd is an implementation of the standard UNIX line printerdaemon which lets you print across a TCP/IP network, without the need to install software on your workstation, andwith all filtering and banners done by the printer. Remoteprinting uses the same commands (lpr, lpq, lpc) as localprinting. The process begins when the LPR call finds a printer on aremote system by looking at the remote (rm) entry in the/etc/printcap file for that printer. LPR handles a printjob for a remote printer by opening a connection with the lpdprocess on the remote system and sending the data file(followed by the control file containing control informationfor this job) to the remote system. The printer-based lpd thenfilters the data and prints the job according to informationcontained in the control file and its own printcap file. The following sections give specific lpd setup instructions forvarious systems. The SuperScript 4400N printer will be usedas an example. You must log in as root in order to execute thecommands.Adding a SuperScript Color Laser Printer to Solaris 2.xLog into your system as root. Add the printer’s IP addressyou already assigned into the /etc/hosts file. Usinglpsystem follow these steps to open a terminal and enterthe printer’s IP address from the command line.1. lpsystem -t bsd address of printer>[ENTER]Enter the 4400N print server host name from the/etc/hosts file. Your system may want its IP addressinstead of the remote host name.2. lpadmin -p -s hostname or IP address>!PORT1 [ENTER]note: There is no space after the remote host name.3. Enable [ENTER]4. Accept [ENTER]Then, make sure that the printer content type is set to PS” bytyping lpstat -p -l to display the current printer settings. If itis not set to PS, type the following on the command line tochange the printer settings.5. lpadmin -p -I ps [ENTER]6. lpadmin -p -T PS [ENTER]To test that the printer was installed into the system, send aprint job using any application in your operating system.Make sure that the printer you choose is the SuperScriptprinter that you installed earlier.
