73Shooting FeaturesUsing Face DetectionIn the following shooting modes, the camera uses facedetection to automatically focus on human faces. If thecamera detects more than one face, a double border isdisplayed around the face that the camera will focuson, and single borders are displayed around the otherfaces.* For more information about face detection while using subject tracking mode, see “SubjectTracking Mode (Focusing on a Moving Subject)” (A57).• When using A (auto) mode, if you press the shutter-release button halfwaywhile no faces are detected or while framing a shot with no faces in it, thecamera selects the focus area (up to nine areas) containing the subject closestto the camera.• When Scene auto selector is selected, the focus area changes depending onwhich scene the camera selects.• If no faces are detected when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway inPortrait and Night portrait scene modes or in smart portrait mode, thecamera will focus on the subject in the center of the frame.Shooting mode Number of faces thatcan be detected Focus area (double border)When AF area mode (A40) inA (auto) mode is set to Facepriority.
