COMSPHERE 3550 Series Data Service Units3-2 July 1999 3550-A2-GB20-40Before You BeginThe COMSPHERE 3000 Series Carrier should alreadybe installed properly and be operational, with afunctioning shared diagnostic control panel (SDCP). AnSDCP (installed in the carrier) is required for installationand maintenance of the Model 3551 DSU. For installationinformation, see the COMSPHERE 3000 Series Carrier,Installation Manual.A fan module may also be needed to dissipate heat.Refer to the Fan Module Installation section in ChapterNO TAG of the COMSPHERE 3000 Series Carrier,Installation Manual to determine whether a fan isrequired.The distance between your DTE and the DSU must bewithin EIA-232-D/V.24 or V.35 limits.• For the EIA-232 connector, the typical maximumdistance is 50 feet at speeds less than or equal to19.2 kbps. If a longer distance is needed, use highquality, low capacitance cable and ensure that theeffective shunt capacitance of the circuit (measuredat the DSU and including the capacitance of thecable and the DTE) does not exceed 2500picofarads, as specified in EIA-232-D.• For the V.35 connector, the recommendedmaximum distance between a DTE and DSU isnominally 1000 feet.Before connecting the DSU, you need to contact thetelephone company to coordinate your installation beforeconnecting the DSU to their network. The DSU can onlybe operated at the data rate for which access to the DDSnetwork is provided. If a DBM is installed, the DSU mustalso be connected to the dial network. You must notify thetelephone company before you connect to the dialnetwork. Refer to the notice at the front of this guide toensure compliance with FCC, Bell Canada, and CanadianDOC rules.How to ChangeHardware StrapsHANDLING PRECAUTIONSFORSTATIC-SENSITIVE DEVICESThis product is designed to protectsensitive components from damagedue to electrostatic discharge (ESD)during normal operation. Whenperforming installation procedures,however, take proper static controlprecautions to prevent damage toequipment. If you are not sure of theproper static control precautions,contact your nearest sales or servicerepresentative.The Model 3551 DSU has several hardware straps thatcontrol the permissive or programmable connection whena DBM is installed, the Test Mode Indication leads, andthe external interface leads (used with a –48 Vdc CentralOffice Power Unit).Refer to Figure 3-1 to locate the switch and jumperlocations. If a DBM is installed, refer to Table 3-1 todetermine which switch needs to be changed, if any. Referto Table 3-2 to determine whether these jumper strapsneed to be changed.
