Page: 3-13WALKER MANUFACTURING COMPANYJuly 2006SERVICE INSTRUCTIONSWheel Nuts Torque - Model MW, MBCheck every 100 hours the eight (8) Drive Tire mount-ing nuts. They should each be torqued to 75-85 ft-lbs.(101.7-115.2 N⋅m).Sharpen Mower Blades - All ModelsCheck mower blade(s) for straightness, sharpness, condition of the cutting edge, and balance every 10hours of operation (or more often when mowing abra-sive type grass or operating on sandy soils). Replaceblades if worn, bent, cracked, or otherwise dam-aged (refer to REPLACING/REPAIRING the MowerBlades in the Service Procedures Section). Use thefollowing procedure to check and sharpen blades:NOTE: Keep blades sharp - cutting with dull bladesnot only yields a poor mowing job but slows the cuttingspeed of the mower and causes extra wear on the en-gine and blade drive by pulling hard.Model MS, MW, MB, MC, MT, MTL1. Stop the engine, remove ignition key, and discon-nect the spark plug wire(s) before raising the mow-er deck to service blades.Model MD1. Stop the engine, remove ignition key, and discon-nect the electrical plug on the fuel shut-off solenoidbefore raising the mower deck to service blades. All Models2. Raise the deck and secure it in the TILT-UP posi-tion. Refer to CLEANING the Grass Buildup inMower Housing in this section for deck raising in-structions.NOTE: PTO shaft must be disconnected beforechecking blades for straightness.3. Check the blades for straightness by marking theblade tip position inside the deck housing, and thenrotating the opposite end of the blade to the sameposition and comparing. If the difference in bladetip track is more than 1/8 in. (3 mm), the blade isbent and should be replaced.4. If the blade cutting edge is dull or nicked, it shouldbe sharpened. Remove blades for sharpening bygrasping the end of the blade using a rag or a thick, padded glove, while loosening and removing thenut, lock washer, and flat washer that mounts theblade.5. Grind cutting edge at the same bevel as theoriginal. Sharpen only the top of the cutting edgeto maintain sharpness.NOTE: Blades can be sharpened with an electricblade sharpener, conventional electric grinder, or ahand file.Mower Blade Profile For Sharpening6. Check blade balance by positioning the blade hor-izontally on a blade balancer or use a nail or shaftthrough the center hole. If either end of the bladerotates downward, grind (remove) metal on thatend until the blade will balance. The blade is prop-erly balanced when neither end drops. Balance ofa blade is generally maintained by removing anequal amount of material from each end of theblade when sharpening.DANGERNEVER operate cutter blades with thedeck in the raised position.WARNINGDO NOT try to straighten a blade that isbent. NEVER weld a broken or crackedblade. ALWAYS replace with a new bladeto assure safety.CAUTIONALWAYS wear eye protection and gloveswhen sharpening a blade.30°Do Not Grind orSharpen on UndersideSharpen atOriginal 30° AngleIntersectionWear AreaWingTip
