2-16 Phaser 3140/3155/3160 Printer Service ManualTheory of OperationSensor Input CircuitPaper Empty SensingThe Paper Empty (width) Sensor on the Power Supply detects the state of paperempty and the state of narrow paper width. If the Paper Empty sensor fails todetect paper existence, it can mean that the Paper Tray is empty, or that narrowpaper is installed.When the print job comes to the CPU, the pickup action is performed regardless ofa paper empty condition. If the paper comes through to the Feed Sensor, the CPUrecognizes the use of narrow paper, if not, the paper empty state is recognized andthe red LED on the Control Panel is illuminated.Manual Feed SensingThrough the operation of an actuator on the frame, the Manual Feed Sensor(photo interrupter) detects the existence of paper. The CPU recognizes paper inthe manual feeder, and feeds it into the printer.Paper Feeding/With Print Cartridge SensingWhen media passes the Feed Sensor actuator, the Feed Sensor sends the feedevent to the CPU. If the Feed Sensor does not detect media after a predeterminedtime, a Jam0 state occurs.Whether the Print Cartridge is inserted or not is detected by CRUM. After thecartridge is mounted, the sub- CRUM reads the print cartridge information fromcontact with CRUM involved in print cartridge.
