VX-8R O PERATING M ANUAL 39TONE S EARCH S CANNINGIn operating situations where you don’t know the CTCSS or DCS tone being used byanother station, you can command the radio to listen to the incoming signal and scan insearch of the tone being used. Two things must be remembered in this regard: You must be sure that your repeater uses the same tone type (CTCSS vs. DCS). Some repeaters do not pass the CTCSS tone; you may have to listen to the stationtransmitting on the repeater uplink (input) frequency in order to allow Tone SearchScanning to work.To scan for the tone in use:1. Set the radio up for either CTCSS or DCS Decoder operation (see the previous dis-cussion). In the case of CTCSS,“TSQTSQTSQTSQTSQ” will appear on the display;in the case of DCS, “DCSDCSDCSDCSDCS” willappear on the display.2. Press the key, then press thekey to recall the Set ModeItem 99: TONE FREQUENCY99: TONE FREQUENCY99: TONE FREQUENCY99: TONE FREQUENCY99: TONE FREQUENCYwhen CTCSS is selected, or MenuItem 26: DCS CODE26: DCS CODE26: DCS CODE26: DCS CODE26: DCS CODE during DCS operation.3. Press the key to enable adjustment of the selected Set Mode Item.4. Press and hold in the key, the “TONE SEARCHTONE SEARCHTONE SEARCHTONE SEARCHTONE SEARCH” notation will appear, release thekey to start scanning for the incoming CTCSS or DCS tone/code.5. When the radio detects the correct tone or code, it will halt on that tone/code, andaudio will be allowed to pass. Press the key to lock in that tone/code, then pressthe key to exit to normal operation.If the Tone Scan feature does not detect a tone or code, it will continue toscan indefinitely. When this happens, it may be that the other station is notsending any tone. You can press the PTT switch to halt the scan at any time.You can also press the key during Tone Scanning to listen to the (muted) signal fromthe other station.
