General information4 Stay informed about the weather. Checkweather forecasts before boating. Avoidboating in hazardous weather. Tell someone where you are going: leave aFloat Plan with a responsible person. Besure to cancel the Float Plan when you re-turn. Use common sense and good judgmentwhen boating. Know your abilities, and besure you understand how your boat han-dles under the different boating conditionsyou may encounter. Operate within yourlimits, and the limits of your boat. Alwaysoperate at safe speeds, and keep a carefulwatch for obstacles and other traffic. Always watch carefully for swimmers duringthe engine operation. Stay away from swimming areas. When a swimmer is in the water near youshift into neutral and shut off the engine.Be informed about boating safety. These rules are used inter-nationally, and are also enforced by the Unit-ed States Coast Guard and local agencies.You should be aware of these rules, and fol-low them whenever you encounter anothervessel on the water.Several sets of rules prevail according to geo-graphic location, but are all basically the sameas the International Rules of the Road.
