During some operating conditions, the active steeringmight deactivate to protect the system from damage. You might notice that the center position of the steeringwheel is changed. Unless there is a SERVICESTEERING SYS message, the system will return tonormal operation as soon as the condition ceases, usually within a very short period of time.At low speeds, the active steering system requires lessmovement of the steering wheel to change vehicledirection than the normal power steering system. Adjustyour driving accordingly. When certain steering faults are present, the activesteering deactivates and vehicle speed might be limited. The SERVICE STEERING SYS and SPEED LIMITEDTO XXX messages will be displayed. See DICWarnings and Messages on page 4‑76. The normalpower steering system is still operational. You mightnotice that the center position of the steering wheel ischanged and that more steering effort at low speedsand less steering effort at high speeds is required. Youcan continue to drive the vehicle with normal powersteering but you should have your dealer/retailer inspectthe steering system as soon as possible in order tohave the problem corrected and the steering wheelposition centered. When stability control activates, the systemautomatically adjusts the front road wheel steeringangle, modifies the suspension stiffness, and selectivelyapplies braking pressure at any one of the vehicle'sbrakes to help maintain directional control of thevehicle. Adjustments to the steering will not be felt inthe steering wheel. See Enhanced StabiliTrak ® onpage 5‑7.It is recommended that the battery not be disconnectedwhen the steering wheel is turned from the centerposition. If this occurs, the center position of thesteering wheel could be temporarily changed a smallamount. You can continue to operate the vehicle and, after a short time, the center position of the steeringwheel will return to normal.Steering TipsIt is important to take curves at a reasonable speed.Traction in a curve depends on the condition of the tiresand the road surface, the angle at which the curve isbanked, and vehicle speed. While in a curve, speed isthe one factor that can be controlled. If there is a need to reduce speed, do it before enteringthe curve, while the front wheels are straight.5-12
