Be sure the cap is properlyand tightly secured.If the coolant is not at the properlevel when the system cools downagain, see your dealer.Engine OverheatingThe vehicle has several indicatorsto warn of engine overheating.There are two engine hot messagesthat may be displayed in the DriverInformation Center (DIC). SeeEngine Cooling System Messageson page 5‑34 for more information.You may decide not to lift the hoodwhen one of these warnings appear,but get service help right away. SeeRoadside Service (U.S. andCanada) on page 13‑7 or RoadsideService (Mexico) on page 13‑9.If you do decide to lift the hood,make sure the vehicle is parked ona level surface.Then check to see if the enginecooling fans are running. If theengine is overheating, the fan(s)should be running. If they are not,do not continue to run the engineand have the vehicle serviced.Notice: Running the enginewithout coolant may causedamage or a fire. Vehicle damagewould not be covered by thewarranty. See Overheated EngineProtection Operating Mode onpage 10‑23 for information ondriving to a safe place in anemergency.If Steam Is Coming from theEngine Compartment{ WARNINGSteam from an overheated enginecan burn you badly, even if youjust open the hood. Stay awayfrom the engine if you see or hearsteam coming from it. Just turn it(Continued)WARNING (CONTINUED)off and get everyone away fromthe vehicle until it cools down.Wait until there is no sign ofsteam or coolant before you openthe hood.If you keep driving when theengine is overheated, the liquidsin it can catch fire. You or otherscould be badly burned. Stop theengine if it overheats, and get outof the vehicle until the engineis cool.If No Steam Is Coming fromthe Engine CompartmentIf an engine overheat warning isdisplayed but no steam can be seenor heard, the problem may not betoo serious.
