Black plate (17,1)Cadillac CTS/CTS-V Owner Manual - 2011Driving and Operating 9-17Ignition Positions(Key Access)The ignition switch can be turned tofour different positions.To shift out of P (Park), the ignitionswitch must be in ON/RUN orACC/ACCESSORY and the brakepedal must be applied.Notice: Using a tool to force thekey from its cylinder could causedamage or break the key. Use thecorrect key and turn the key onlywith your hand. Make sure thekey is all the way in. If it is andyou have a manual transmissionvehicle, turn the steering wheelleft and right while you turn thekey hard. If none of this works,then the vehicle needs service.A (STOPPING THE ENGINE/LOCK/OFF): When the vehicle isstopped, turn the ignition switch toLOCK/OFF to turn the engine off.Retained Accessory Power (RAP)will remain active. See RetainedAccessory Power (RAP) onpage 9‑22 for more information.This is the only position in which thekey can be removed. This positionlocks the ignition and shifter onautomatic transmission vehicles,and the ignition and steering wheelon manual transmission vehicles.Do not turn the engine off when thevehicle is moving. This will cause aloss of power assist in the brakeand steering systems and disablethe airbags.In an emergency:1. Brake using a firm and steadypressure. Do not pump thebrakes repeatedly. This maydeplete power assist, requiringincreased brake pedal force.2. Shift the vehicle to neutral. Thiscan be done while the vehicle ismoving. After shifting to neutral,firmly apply the brakes and steerthe vehicle to a safe location.3. Come to a complete stop. Shiftto P (Park) with an automatictransmission, or Neutral with amanual transmission. Turn theignition to LOCK/OFF.4. Set the parking brake.
