Regular maintenanceis not required. If power steering assist is lost dueto a system malfunction, the vehiclecan be steered, but may requireincreased effort.See your dealer if there is aproblem. If the steering wheel is turned until itreaches the end of its travel and isheld against that position for anextended period of time, powersteering assist may be reduced. If the steering assist is used for anextended period of time, powerassist may be reduced.Normal use of the power steeringassist should return when thesystem cools down.See specific vehicle steeringmessages under Vehicle Messageson page 5-36.Variable Effort SteeringSome vehicles have a steeringsystem that varies the amount ofeffort required to steer the vehicle inrelation to the speed of the vehicle. The amount of steering effortrequired is less at slower speeds tomake the vehicle moremaneuverable and easier to park. Atfaster speeds, the steering effortincreases to provide a sport-like feelto the steering. This providesmaximum control and stability. If the vehicle seems harder to steerthan normal when parking or drivingslowly, there may be a problem withthe system.
