Reduce Static with the Static Suppression OptionIntroductionThe Static Suppression Option (sometimes referred to as an Ionizer Bar) is a Commercial Productthat can be ordered as part # 3010114574. If you are experiencing static-related imaging problemsthis optional upgrade kit contains an ionizer bar that provides a solution to reduce static. Somerigid media can have a large static surface charge. If the charge is high enough, ink can berepelled from the media. This ink mist can show up as cloudy areas in white sections of theimage. Static not only causes these printing artifacts, but can also result in excessive inkaccumulation on the bottom of the carriage.PurposeIonization is a solution to the problem of static. A common print industry method of controllingstatic electricity is the use of ionization. For the anti-static bar to be effective, it must be close tothe media. The bar uses AC current to create positive and negative ions, which are attracted tothe unbalanced surface of the material. This neutralizes the media and ink is more readilyaccepted. It is important to note that static electricity cannot be entirely eliminated; only reduced. To eliminate static electricity, something physically would have to be done to the conductivity ofthe material.Humidity is also important to control static. Static-related print issues can be greatly reduced byan increase in print environment humidity. While most media will print without difficulty athumidity levels between 30 and 50%, thermoplastics will print more successfully when humidityis above 40%. Some locales, such as desert areas frequently deal with very low humidity, whileother regions only experience this at certain times of the year. If a printer is installed in a low-humidity area and/or a large volume of printed work is on media that is prone to static, werecommend the installation of a humidity control system. When to doWhy Static is a ProblemMany standard print materials such as PVC and acrylic are electrical insulators, and the staticcharge generated and held by these materials can provide some printing challenges.Thermoplastic materials are the most common static-laden print media. Static-prone materialstend to attract dust and hair and release charges that can be felt and seen. How to Activate the Static Suppression ionizing systemProcedure1. Press the Settings tab on the printer interface screen.2. Click on the Printer icon.3. If the Ionizer Bar option is set to Off, set it to ON (this option is not displayed if the option is notinstalled).NOTEOnce you have set it to On, it will always automatically turn on at the beginning of aflatbed job. Unless you use media that you are certain does not require staticreduction, there is no need to turn it Off as the bar is only active when the printer isprinting.Reduce Static with the Static Suppression Option122 Chapter 8 - Static Suppression Option
