In accordance with this regulation, the fol-lowing requirements should be observed.Type of ServiceYour Dell notebook modem is designed to be used onstandard device telephone lines. The modem connects tothe telephone line by means of a standard jack called theUSOC RJ-11C. Connection to a telephone-company-provided coin service (central-office-implementedsystems) is prohibited. Connection to party-line service issubject to state tariffs.Telephone Company ProceduresThe goal of the telephone company is to provide you withthe best service it can. To this end, the company mayneed to occasionally make changes in its equipment,operations, or procedures. If these changes might affectyour service or the operation of your equipment, the tele-phone company will give you notice, in writing, to allowyou to make any changes necessary to maintain uninter-rupted service.If you have any questions about your telephone line, suchas how many pieces of equipment you can connect to it,the telephone company will provide this information onrequest.In certain circumstances, it may be necessary for the tele-phone company to request information from youconcerning the equipment that you have connected toyour telephone line. On request of the telephone com-pany, provide the FCC registration number and the ringerequivalence number (REN) of the equipment that is con-nected to your line; both of these items are listed on theequipment label. The sum of all the RENs on your tele-phone line should be less than five to ensure properservice from the telephone company. In some cases, asum of five may not be usable on a given line.If Problems AriseIf your telephone equipment is not operating properly,immediately disconnect the modem from the telephoneline, as it may harm the telephone network. If the tele-phone company notes a problem, it may temporarilydiscontinue service. When practical, it will notify you inadvance of this disconnection. If advance notice is notfeasible, you will be notified as soon as possible. Whenyou are notified, you will be given the opportunity to cor-rect the problem and informed of your right to file acomplaint with the FCC.If repairs are needed on your Dell notebook modem, theyshould be performed by Dell Computer Corporation or anauthorized representative of Dell Computer Corporation.To return products, you must call Dell customer serviceat the toll-free number shown in Chapter 5, “GettingHelp,” to receive a Credit Return Authorization Number.For more information on returning equipment, see the“Total Satisfaction” Return Policy in Appendix D, “War-ranties and Return Policy.”Installation and LabelingYour Dell notebook modem provides all the connectionsnecessary for proper operation. Connection to the tele-phone network should be made with standard modularcords that connect to the jacks or the modem.Load NumberThe load number (LN) assigned to each terminal devicedenotes the percentage of the total load to be connectedto a telephone loop which is used by the device to preventoverloading. The termination on a loop may consist ofany combination of devices subject only to the require-ment that the total of the LNs of all the devices does notexceed 100. An alphabetic suffix is also specified in theLN for the appropriate ringing type (A or B), if applica-ble. For example, LN = 20 A designates an LN of 20 andan “A” type ringer.IC Notice (Canada Only)Most Dell computer systems (and other Dell digital appa-ratus) are classified by the Industry Canada (IC)Interference-Causing Equipment Standard #3 (ICES-003)as Class B digital devices.
