10 Rino ® 520/530 Owner’s ManualU NIT OPERATION > R ADIO PAGESetting the Channel and CodeThe Rino 520/530 has a total of 22 channels (notincluding GMRS repeater channels) and 38 codes toselect from using the Channel and Code fields. Channels1–7 and 15-22 are GMRS channels, 8-14 are FRSchannels, and 15R–22R are GMRS repeater channels(repeater channels are available on U.S. units only andare disabled by default). To communicate with other Rinoand FRS/GMRS users, you must be on the same channeland code. Garmin Rino units work with 3rd party FRS/GMRS radios, provided the other radios use standardFRS/GMRS frequencies. A chart of Rino frequencies maybe found in the “Appendix.”Squelch codes allow you to hear calls from only specificpersons. Thirty-eight (38) Codes (called ContinuousTone Controlled Squelch System or CTCSS) allowyour Rino 520/530 to ignore unwanted calls from otherpersons using the same channel. Simply select the samecode (number) as selected by the other person(s) withwhich you plan to communicate.NOTE: Codes do not cause your conversation to beprivate. They only allow you to filter out other userson the same channel, so you only hear the radios youwant to hear. Codes on are not a scrambling system!Refer to the section on Voice Scramble operation.Select from FRS 8–14, GMRS 1-7 & 15–22,and 15R–22R GMRS repeater channels (withRepeater Channels enabled).
