SYSTEM CONFIGURATION 25System ConfigurationNote that the delay settings may also be adjust-ed at any time when the Dolby Digital or DolbyPro Logic modes are in use by pressing theDelay button on the front panel Ô or remote, followed by a press of the Set button(8. Next, press the ⁄/¤ buttons g5until the desired figure appears in the MainInformation Display W.Crossover FrequencyThe crossover frequency is the point at which theAVR 7000 divides low frequency, or bass sounds, from the rest of the audio output. This is impor-tant as it enables you to match the performanceof the AVR’s’ bass management system to theprecise characteristics of your speakers and sub-woofer. When a subwoofer is used, this settingdetermines which sounds go to the subwooferand which to your other speakers, that are set for”Small”.Before entering the data for this setting, you willneed to find out what the crossover point of yoursubwoofer is. This is the number that is the highrange of your subwoofer’s frequency response.Consult the Owner’s Manual for your subwoofer, and look for the frequency response line on thespecifications page. The number at the high endis the figure that should be used for thecrossover point. If your subwoofer has anadjustable crossover, set it for 80Hz, 90Hz or100Hz, and then enter that setting into theAVR 7000.To set the crossover point, make certain that the› cursor is on the CROSSOVER FREQline. Next, press the ‹/› buttons 9 untilthe desired figure appears on the screen. If thechoices shown do not match the choices avail-able, select the number closest to the requirednumber. If you do not know the correct crossover point, orare unable to find the information, leave the fac-tory default in effect. If it appears that there is a“hole” in the smoothness of the system’s sound,as evidenced by rough transitions from bass tohigher-range sounds, choose a higher settingthan the default. For all modes other than Dolby Digital, theSurround Setup is now complete. For the DolbyDigital mode, there is one more adjustment to bemade. Press the ¤ button 6 to go to theNIGHT MODE setting line.Night Mode SettingsThe Night mode is a feature of Dolby Digital thatuses special processing to preserve the dynamicrange and full intelligibility of a movie soundtrack while reducing the peak level. This preventsabruptly loud transitions from disturbing others, without reducing the sonic impact of a digitalsource. Note that the Night mode is only avail-able when Dolby Digital signals are played. To adjust the Night mode setting from the menu, make certain that the › cursor is on the Nightline of the SURROUND SETUP menu.Next, press ‹/› buttons 9 to choosebetween the following settings.OFF: When OFF is in the highlighted video, theNight mode will not function.MID: When MID is in the highlighted video, amild compression will be applied.MA X: When MAX is in the highlighted video, amore severe compression algorithm will beapplied. We recommend that you select the MID settingas a starting point and change to the MAX set-ting later, if desired.Note that the Night mode may be adjusteddirectly any time that a Dolby Digital source isplaying by pressing the Night button P. Whenthe button is pressed, the wordsD-RANGE will appear in the lower third ofthe video screen and in the Main InformationDisplay W. Press the ⁄/¤ button 6 withinthree seconds to select the desired setting, thenpress Set (8 to confirm the setting. When all settings for the surround setup havebeen made, press the ⁄/¤ buttons 6 so thatthe › cursor is next to RETURN TOMENU, and press the Set button 8 to returnto the main menu.Output Level AdjustmentOutput level adjustment is a key part of the con-figuration process for any surround sound prod-uct. It is particularly important for a Dolby Digitalreceiver such as the AVR 7000, as correct outputswill ensure that you hear sound tracks with theproper directionality and intensity.NOTE: Listeners are often confused about theoperation of the surround channels. While someassume that sound should always be comingfrom each speaker, most of the time there will belittle or no sound in the surround channels. Thisis because they are only used when a moviedirector or sound mixer specifically places soundthere to create ambiance, a special effect or tocontinue action from the front of the room tothe rear. When the output levels are properly setit is normal for surround speakers to operateonly occasionally. Artificially increasing the vol-ume to the rear speakers may destroy the illu-sion of an enveloping sound field that dupli-cates the way you hear sound in a movie the-ater or concert hall.IMPORTANT NOTE: The output level can beadjusted for each digital and analog surroundmode separately. This allows you to compensatefor level differences between speakers, that mayalso vary with the surround mode selected, or toincrease or decrease the level of certain speakersintentionally, depending on the surround modeselected. Before beginning the output level adjustmentprocess, make certain that all speaker connec-tions have been properly made. The systemvolume should be turned down at first. Finally, make certain that the Balance Control & isset to the center “12 o’clock” position. To adjust and calibrate the output levels withhelp of the test tone generator integrated, followthese steps, (the levels can be adjusted also withan external source, without any test tone, seeLevel Trim Adjustment on page 33). For accuratecalibration, it is a good idea to make theseadjustments while seated in your favorite listen-ing position:Output level adjustment is most easily donethrough the OUTPUT ADJUST menu(Figure 7). If you are already at the main menu, press the ¤ buttons 6 until the on-screen ›cursor is next to the OUTPUT ADJUSTline. If you are not at the main menu, press theOSD button I to bring up the M A I NAUDIO SETUP menu (Figure 1), and thenpress the ¤ buttons 6 three times so that theon-screen › cursor is next to the Output adjustline. Press the Set button 8 to bring theOUTPUT ADJUST menu (Figure 7) tothe screen.Figure 7As soon as the new menu appears, you will heara test noise circulate from speaker to speaker ina clockwise direction around the room. The testnoise will play for two seconds in each speakerbefore circulating, and a blinking on-screen cur-sor will appear next to the name of each speakerlocation when the sound is at that speaker.
