PROGRAMMING THE REMOTE 39Programming the Remotethe red light is on, and it must begin within 20seconds after the light illuminates.2. Press the Test Tone button 4. The red lightunder the Input or Video Selector 2# willblink in a sequence that corresponds to the three-digit code, with a one-second pause between eachdigit. Count the number of blinks between eachpause to determine the digit of the code. One blinkis the number 1, two blinks is the number 2, andso forth. Ten blinks are used to indicate a “0.”Example: One blink, followed by a one-secondpause, followed by six blinks, followed by a one-second pause, followed by ten blinks indicatesthat the code has been set to 160.For future reference enter the Setup Codes for theequipment in your system here:CD ______________ TAPE ______________SAT ____________TV ______________ VCR ______________AUX ______________DVD ________________Programmed Device FunctionsOnce the AVR 7000’s remote has been pro-grammed for the codes of other devices, press theappropriate Input or Video Selector 2# tochange the remote from control over the AVR7000 to the additional product. When you pressany of these buttons, it will briefly flash in red toindicate that you have changed the device beingcontrolled. When operating a device other than theAVR 7000 RDS, the controls may not correspondexactly to the function printed on the remoteor button. Some commands, such as the volumecontrol, are the same as they are with theAVR 7000. Other buttons will change their func-tion so that they correspond to a secondary labelon the remote. For example, the Sleep andSurround Mode selector buttons " alsofunction as the Channel Up/Down button whenoperating most TV sets, VCRs or cable boxes. TheChannel Up/Down indication is printed directly onthe remote. The same is true for standard CDplayer, cassette deck, VCR and DVD functions, which follow the standard function icons printedon top of the buttons. For some products, however, the function of aparticular button does not follow the commandprinted on the remote. In order to see whichfunction a button controls, consult the FunctionList tables printed on page 42/43. To use thosetables, first check the type of device being con-trolled (e.g., TV, VCR). Next, look at the remotecontrol diagram pictured on page 42. Note thateach button has a number on it.To find out what function a particular button hasfor a specific device, find the button number onthe Function List and then look in the column forthe device you are controlling. For example, but-ton number 22 is the Speaker button for the AVR7000, but it is the “Menu” button for many TVs,VCRs and Satellite receivers. Button number 35 isthe Preset Tune Down button for the AVR 7000,the “Reverse Skip” button for CD players and the“Page Down” button for some cable boxes.Note that the numbers used to describe the but-ton functions on page 42/43 for the purposes ofdescribing how a button operates are a differentset of numbers than those used in the rest of thismanual to describe the button functions for theAVR.Notes on Using the AVR 7000 Remote WithOther Devices.• Manufacturers may use different code sets forthe same product category. For that reason, it isimportant that you check to see if the code setyou have entered operates as many controls aspossible. If it appears that only a few functionsoperate, check to see if another code set willwork with more buttons.• Depending on the brand and product type usedthe functions listed in the Function List tablesmay not correspond with the function the unitreacts on the command. In these cases it’s agood idea to edit the reaction of the unit into thecorresponding line of the table or to set up aseparate list.• When a button is pressed on the AVR 7000remote, the red light under the Input or VideoSelector 2# for the product being operat-ed should flash briefly. If the Device ControlSelector flashes for some but not all buttons for aparticular product, it does NOT indicate a prob-lem with the remote, but rather that no functionis programmed for the button being pushed.Learning Codes from a RemoteIn addition to using codes from the remote’sinternal code library, the AVR 7000’s remote isable to “learn” codes from remotes that may notbe in the code library. In addition, you may usethis function to “learn over” the codes from apreprogrammed device to add functions notincluded in the preprogrammed codes. To learnor transfer codes from an IR remote to the AVR7000’s remote, follow these steps:1. Place the front of the original remote with thecode being sent so that it is facing the IRTransmitter Window $ on the AVR 7000remote “head-to-head.” The remotes should bebetween 2 and 8 cm apart.2. Select the button on the remote that you wishto use as the device selector for the codes aboutto be entered. This may be any of theCD/Tape/DVD Input Selectors 2 or theVideo Remote Selectors #.3. Press the Device Selector button chosen2# and the Set Button 8 at the sametime. Hold these buttons until the ProgramIndicator light 0 turns orange and the redlight under the device selector button turns red.Release the buttons.4. Within 20 seconds press the button on theAVR 7000 remote that you wish to program.Note that the Program Indicator light 0will begin to flash for six seconds and the redlight under the device selector will go out. Notethat any button on the remote EXCEPT the AVRbutton 1, the CD/Tape/DVD InputSelectors 2 or the Video RemoteSelectors # and the Light button J maybe “taught” a remote code from another remote. The Power On function (if different from thePower Off function, taught to the Power 3button), that normally is associated with theInput Selectors 2 #, can be taught to anybutton, that is not charged with any function forthe device selected, e.g. Test 4.5. As long as the Program Indicator light 0is flashing, press and hold the button on theoriginal remote that you wish to “teach” into theAVR 7000 remote. When the ProgramIndicator light 0 turns green, release thebutton. Note that the Program Indicator will thenbegin to flash orange again.6. Within five seconds, press the same button onthe source remote again to verify that the remotecode has been learned correctly. The ProgramIndicator light 0 will flash green twice andthen turn to a steady orange color indicating thatthe programming was successful.NOTE: If the Program Indicator light 0turns red during step 5 or 6, the programmingwas not successful. Repeat the step 3 through 6,but in step 5 hold the button on the originalremote pressed for some seconds after theProgram Indicator light 0 turned green. Ifthe indicator keeps flashing red in steps 5 or 6,this code cannot be taught.7. Repeat steps 4 though 6 for each button onthe source remote that you wish to transfer tothe AVR 7000 remote.8. Once all codes have been transferred from theoriginal source remote to the AVR 7000 remote, press and hold the Device Selector button2# for the device being programmed andthe Set Button 8 at the same time until theProgram Indicator light 0 flashes orangetwice. Release the buttons.
