38 PROGRAMMING THE REMOTEProgramming the RemoteThe AVR 7000 is equipped with a powerfulremote control that will control not only thereceiver’s functions, but also most popular brandsof audio and video equipment, including CDplayers, cassette decks, TV sets, cable boxes,VCRs, satellite receivers and other home-theaterequipment. Once the AVR 7000’s remote is pro-grammed with the codes for the products youown, it is possible to eliminate most otherremotes and replace them with the convenienceof a single, backlit universal remote control.Programming the Remotewith CodesAs shipped from the factory, the remote is fullyprogrammed for all AVR 7000 functions, as well asthose of most Harman Kardon CD changers, DVDplayers, CD players and cassette decks. In addition,by following one of the methods below, you mayprogram the remote to operate a wide range ofdevices from other manufacturers.Direct Code EntryThis method is the easiest way to program yourremote to work with different products.1. Use the tables in the following pages to deter-mine the three-digit code or codes that matchboth the product type (e.g., VCR, TV), and thespecific brand name. If there is more than onenumber for a brand, make note of the differentchoices.2. Turn on the unit you wish to program into theAVR 7000 remote.3. Press and hold both the Input or VideoSelector 2# for the type of product to beentered (e.g., VCR, TV) and the Mute button5 at the same time. Hold both buttons untilthe red light under the Selector button2#stays lit. Note that the next step must take placewhile the red light is on, and it must begin within20 seconds after the light illuminates.4. If the unit you wish to program into the AVR7000 remote has a remotable Power on/off func-tion, follow these steps:a. Point the AVR 7000’s remote towards the unitto be programmed, and enter the first three-digit code number using the Numeric buttonsG. If the unit being programmed turns off, thecorrect code has been entered. Press the Inputor Video Selector 2# again, and notethat the red light will flash twice before goingdark to confirm the entry.b. If the product to be programmed does NOTturn off, continue to enter the three-digit codenumbers until the equipment turns off. At thispoint, the correct code has been entered. Pressthe Input or Video Selector 2# againand note that the red light will flash twicebefore going dark to confirm the entry.5. If the Power function of the unit to be pro-grammed cannot be remoted, follow these steps(max. 20 seconds after step 3 above, or else step3 must be repeated first):a. Enter the first three-digit code number usingthe Numeric buttons G and press theInput or Selector 2# again. Press theremote button of any transport functionremotable with the unit, e.g. Pause P orPlay fl O. If the unit being programmedstarts that function, the correct code has beenentered.b. If the unit does not start the function whosebutton was pressed, repeat steps 3 and 5aabove with the next three-digit code numberlisted in the setup code table for that brandand product type, until the unit reacts properlyto the transport function transmitted.6. Try all of the functions on the remote to makecertain that the product operates properly. Keepin mind that many manufacturers use a numberof different combinations of codes, so it is a goodidea to make certain that not only does thePower control work, but that the volume, channeland transport controls work as they should. Iffunctions do not work properly, you may need touse a different remote code.7. If the unit does not react to any code en-tered, if the code for your product does notappear in the tables in this manual, or if not allfunctions operate properly, try programming theremote with the Auto Search Method.Note on Using the AVR 7000 remote withthe Harman Kardon CD Recorder CDR2.As shipped from the factory the remote is pro-grammed for controlling Harman Kardon CDplayers. But it is able to control most functionsof the CD Recorder CDR2 (see function list onpage 42) too after the code ”002” is entered tothe CD Selector button 2 as describedabove. For returning to the CD player controlcommands the code ”001” must be entered.Auto-Search MethodIf the unit you wish to include in the AVR7000’sremote is not listed in the code tables in thismanual or if the code does not seem to operateproperly, you may wish to program the correctcode using the Auto Search method that follows.Note that the Auto Search method works onlywith units whose Power functions can be remot-ed:1. Turn on the product that you wish to include inthe AVR 7000 remote.2. Press the Input or Video Selector 2#for the type of product to be entered (e.g., VCR,TV) and the Mute button 5 at the same time.Hold both buttons until the red light under thebutton stays lit. Note that the next step must takeplace while the red light is on, and it must beginwithin 20 seconds after the light illuminates.3. To find out if the code for your unit is pre-pro-grammed, point the AVR 7000 remote towardsthe unit to be programmed, and press and holdthe Sleep Selector button". This will send outa series of codes from the remote’s built-in database, with each flash of the red light under theInput or Video Selector 2# indicatingthat a code has been sent. When the device to beprogrammed turns off, immediately release theSleep Selector button". Note that it maytake one minute or more until the right code isfound and the unit turns off.4. When the Sleep button was not released intime after the unit turned off, the right code willbe ”overrun”. That’s why a function test shouldbe made: Turn the unit on again and press theSleep Selector button" once, than theSurround Mode selector once too. Whenthe unit turns off, the right code was found, when not, the code was ”overrun”. To re-find thecorrect code turn on the unit immediately againand, while the Input or Video Selector2# still lights red, press (not hold pressed)the Surround Mode Selector buttonrepeatedly to step backwards through the codesavailable and observe the reaction of the unit ateach press. As soon as the unit turns off the cor-rect code is found.5. Press the Input or Video Selector 2#again, and note that the red light will flash twicebefore going dark to confirm the entry.6. Try all of the functions on the remote to makecertain that the product operates. Keep in mindthat many manufacturers use a number of differ-ent combinations of codes, and it is a good ideato make certain that not only the Power controlworks, but the volume, channel and transportcontrols, as appropriate. If all functions do notwork properly, you may need to Auto-Search fora different code, or enter a code via the DirectCode Entry method.Code ReadoutWhen the code has been entered using the AutoSearch method, it is always a good idea to findout the exact code so that it may be easily reen-tered if necessary. You may also read the codes toverify which device has been programmed to aspecific Control Selector button.1. Press and hold both the Input or VideoSelector 2# for the type of product to beentered (e.g., VCR, TV) and the Mute button5 at the same time. Hold both buttons untilthe red light under the buttons 2# stay lit.Note that the next step must take place while
