If you follow all of the steps in this procedure, youcompletely disassemble the ThinkPad 701C/701CS.However, for some replacement operations, you may notneed to completely disassemble the ThinkPad701C/701CS. In those situations, the relative sequence ofsteps in this procedure is important. Some FRUs must beremoved to reach the failing FRU, or to make it easier towork with another FRU.This procedure contains instructions for the following: Removing the Keyboard Cover Removing the Keyboard Separating the Display and Base Units Removing the Top System Board and Inverter Card Removing the Bottom System Board and Modem Taking Apart the Base Assembly▌1▐ Remove the battery shown in the figure on page163.▌2▐ Remove the SO-DIMM cover and any installedSO-DIMM cards, shown in the figure on page163.See “Removing and Replacing the SO-DIMM Card”on page 178 for more detailed information.▌3▐ Remove the PCMCIA cover and filler plugshown in the figure on page 164. Remove anyinstalled PCMCIA cards.See “Removing PCMCIA Cards” on page 159 formore detailed information.▌4▐ Remove the parallel port cover, shown in thefigure on page 163.Warning: Do not drop or apply any shock to the harddisk drive. The hard disk drive is sensitive to physicalshock. Incorrect handling can damage it and causepermanent loss of data on the hard disk. Before removingthe hard disk drive, have the user make a backup copy ofall the information on the hard disk. Never remove thehard disk drive while the system is operating or while it isin Suspend mode.▌5▐ Remove the hard disk drive, shown in the figureon page 163.Note: Remove the hard disk drive by inserting acoin in the slot and twisting until the hard disk driveis unseated.
