26 IBM® xSeries 220: Installation GuideInstalling a microprocessorYour server comes with one microprocessor, which is installed in microprocessorconnector U12 (the microprocessor connector that is closer to the power supply). Thisis the startup (boot) microprocessor. If you install a microprocessor in microprocessorconnector U11, that one becomes the startup microprocessor, and the microprocessorthat is installed in microprocessor connector U12 is the application microprocessor. You must also install a VRM when you install a microprocessor.Notes:1. The illustrations in this document might differ slightly from your server.2. If necessary, see “System board option connectors” on page 4 for connectorlocations.Attention:• To avoid damage and ensure proper server operation when you install a new oradditional microprocessor, use microprocessors that have the same cache sizeand type and the same clock speed. Microprocessor internal clock frequenciesand external clock frequencies must be identical. See the ServerProven list athttp://www.ibm.com/pc/compat for a list of microprocessors for use withyour server.• When you handle electrostatic discharge (ESD) sensitive devices, takeprecautions to avoid damage from static electricity. For details on handling thesedevices, see “Handling static sensitive devices” on page xi.To install an additional microprocessor, do the following:1. Review the safety precautions in “Safety” on page v.2. Turn off the server and peripheral devices and disconnect all external cables andpower cords; then, remove the cover (see “Removing the side cover” on page 10for details).3. Carefully remove the support bracket assembly from the server (see “Removingthe support bracket assembly” on page 10). Store the cover and the supportbracket assembly in a safe place.4. Lift the release lever on the microprocessor connector, and remove the terminatorcard from the microprocessor connector.5. Install the microprocessor:a. Touch the static-protective package containing the new microprocessor to anyunpainted metal surface on the server; then, remove the microprocessor fromthe package.b. Orient the microprocessor over the microprocessor connector, as shown in thefollowing illustration. Carefully press the microprocessor into the connector.
