The remote Operations Console can be configuredto run the 5250 emulator application and the graphical control panel application.In general, both applications make it possible to perform the majority of systemoperations tasks, for example backup and recovery, with the iSeries servers andmanaging staff in physically separate locations.The connection between the remote and direct-attach Operations Consoles usesWindows dial-up networking (Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP). Direct-attachOperations Console uses Windows NT Remote Access Service (RAS) foraccess.See “iSeries Operations Console: Direct attach, LAN, remote, and HMC” onpage 736 for details about Operations Console and cabling requirements.Software requisitesOperations Console is a component of iSeries Access for Windows (known asClient Access Express for iSeries in releases prior to V5R2). The PC must berunning the Windows NT 4.0, 2000, or XP Professional operating system to besupported. The LAN-attached Operations Console is supported on servers withi5/OS and OS/400 V5R1 or V5R2.Menu interfaceSystem-supplied menus to most system functions provide a task-orientedapproach so that a user unfamiliar with control language can set up and usei5/OS and OS/400. The menus use an object-oriented approach by providing alist of objects for the user to work with. A fast path gives quick access to systemfunctions for the more experienced users.Online helpThe iSeries help facility provides comprehensive explanations of displayfunctions to help users be more productive. The index search facility can be usedto request help for a task that involves multiple displays. Index search includesmany synonyms so that users can ask for information in their own words or in theterms used by the system.
