9. Install the new microprocessor (see “Replacing a microprocessor and heatsink”).Attention: If you are replacing a microprocessor, use the empty installationtool that comes with the new microprocessor to remove the microprocessor.10. If you do not intend to install a microprocessor on the socket, install thesocket cover that you removed in step 8 on page 321 on the microprocessorsocket.Attention: The pins on the socket are fragile. Any damage to the pins mayrequire replacing the system board.ResultsIf you are instructed to return the microprocessor, follow all packaginginstructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are supplied toyou.Replacing a microprocessor and heat sinkThe following notes describe the type of microprocessor that the server supportsand other information that you must consider when you install a microprocessorand heat sink.About this taskv Microprocessors are to be installed only by trained technicians.Important: Always use the microprocessor installation tool to install amicroprocessor. Failing to use the microprocessor installation tool may damagethe microprocessor sockets on the system board. Any damage to themicroprocessor sockets may require replacing the system board.v Be extremely careful, the microprocessor socket contacts are very fragile. Do nottouch the microprocessor socket contacts. Contaminants on the microprocessorcontacts or microprocessor socket contacts, such as oil from your skin, can causeconnection failures between the contacts and the socket.v Do not allow the thermal grease on the microprocessor and heat sink to come incontact with anything. Contact with any surface can contaminate the thermalgrease and the microprocessor socket.Installation toolMicroprocessorFigure 220.
