1Chapter One : Connecting Your DevicesConnectionsChapter One: Connecting Your DevicesWelcome to the Kenwood VR-4900/VR-4700/KRF-V9993DConnection and Setup Guide. This chapter guides youthrough connecting your home entertainment devices toyour new Kenwood audio-video receiver.Once all your devices are connected, you can set up thePowerTouch (see Chapter Two).Refer to the following pages for details on connecting thesedevices:Speakers page␣ 4TV page␣ 8VCR(s) page␣ 12CD Player, Kenwood 200-Disc Changer page␣ 14DVD Player page␣ 16CD-R Recorder page␣ 18MD Recorder page␣ 20Tape Deck(s) page␣ 20Laser Disc Player page␣ 24Turntable page␣ 28Camcorder/Second VCR page␣ 29Antennas page␣ 31All necessary cables should be provided with your homeentertainment device (not with your new receiver). If youdo not have the correct cables, you may purchase thesecables from any home entertainment store or by visitingthe Kenwood USA Web site: www.kenwoodusa.com (forUSA and Canada only). To make coaxial digital connections, be sure to use a high-quality digital audio cable, not a standard audio cable.Do not plug in the receiver or any other device to AC poweruntil all connections have been made. Once all devices havebeen connected, you may plug them in and provide power.Important:Your new receiver requires adequate ventilation to performreliably. Be sure not to block the ventilation area on the topor back (or both sides) of the receiver with another device. These areas should be:USA and Canada: at least 6 inches (15 cm) from any ob-struction.Other countries: at least top; 50cm, back; 10cm, and leftand right side; 10cm.Do not install your receiver where direct sunlight or highfrequency flourescent lighting can shine directly into theremote sensor. This can cause your new receiver to malfunc-tion.Before You BeginThis manual covers the most common and standard con-nections to the receiver. Because of its versatility, you maydecide to connect your devices differently. Before making any video connections to the your receiver :• You can use either S-Video or standard composite (RCA)video connections.• If all of your video devices and TV have S-Video connec-tors, we suggest that you use them exclusively, since itwill provide superior video performance. Before Connection:The connection scheme in this manual shows the most typi-cal example with a receiver. But the receiver can also be con-nected and used in several ways other than the example. Before connecting any video device to the Receiver, pleaseread carefully the following information.Video signalsThe receiver incorporates video signal separation and mix-ing circuitry which enables mutual conversion between thecomposite video and S-Video signals. It is also equippedwith component video signal input/output. (VR-4900 andKRF-9993D only)Video output at the Monitor connectors or the VIDEOconnectorsThe monitor connectors or the VIDEO connectors of theReceiver outputs the video signal according to the connectedTV (video monitor, VCR) regardless of whether the con-nected video or DVD device outputs the composite videoor S-Video. The component signals will be output only atthe component MONITOR OUT connectors (VR-4900 andKRF-V9993D only).• When the connected video device or TV is equipped withS-Video connectors, it is recommended to use S-Videoconnectors to enjoy higher video equality.• If the video device and/or TV do not have a S-Video in-put connector, it is recommended only to use the (stan-dard) video connector.Mutual conversion between composite video, S-Video andcomponent video signals is limited in the directions of ar-rows in the following diagram.Input Output1 Composite Composite2 S-Video S-Video3 Component ComponentIf several video connections are made, one of them will beselected based on the priority 1, 2 and 3.• If you plan on using the VR-4900 or the KRF-V9993Din a Dual-Room application (see Chapter Four), youmust use the composite video connections in additionto any S-Video connections. Only video sources con-nected with composite connectors can be viewed in thesecond room.
