29OperationsAmbience effectsThis receiver is equipped with listening modes that allowyou to enjoy an enhanced sonic ambience with a variety ofvideo sources. In order to obtain the optimum effect from the surroundmodes, make sure to input the proper speaker settingsbeforehand. ™Surround modesDolby DigitalThe Dolby Digital surround format lets you enjoy up to 5.1 channels ofdigital surround sound from Dolby Digital program sources (such asLaserdisc or DVD software marked ). Compared with previ-ous Dolby surround, Dolby Digital provides even better sound quality, greater spatial accuracy, and improved dynamic range.NoteAlthough a full set of speakers (front left, right, and center, surround leftand right, and a subwoofer) is required for true 5.1 channel Dolby Digitalsurround sound, this receiver lets you enjoy Dolby Digital (and DolbySurround) program sources, even if you connect only the front speakers.* LFE = Low Frequency Effects. This channel delivers separate non-directional bass signals to the subwoofer for more dynamic deep basssound effects.Although only Dolby Digital soundtracks incorporate a separate lowfrequency channel, connecting a subwoofer will also improve deep bassperformance in the other surround modes. The indication “LFE” appears in the display when a signal is being inputfor this channel.DTSThe DTS multi-channel audio format is available on CD, LD and DVDsoftware. DTS is a strictly digital format and can not be decoded insidemost CD, LD or DVD players. For this reason, if you attempt to listen toDTS encoded software through the analog output of your new CD, LDor DVD player, you will experience digital noise in most cases. This noisecan be quite loud if the analog output is connected directly to a highpower amplification system. Proper measures for playing the digitaloutput as described below should be taken to avoid this situation. Toenjoy DTS Digital Surround playback, an external 5.1 channel DTSDigital Surround decoder system or an amplifier with a built-in DTSDigital Surround decoder must be connected to the digital output (S/PDIF, AES/EBU or TosLink) of a CD, LD or DVD player.* LFE = Low Frequency Effects. This channel delivers separate non-directional bass signals to the subwoofer for more dynamic deepbass sound effects.DTS has a .1 or LFE channel. The indication “LFE” appears in the display when a signal is beinginput for this channel.Manufactured under license from Digital TheaterSystems, Inc. This is achieved with an intelligent, built-in feed-back logic design, a matrix surround decoding and the decoding ofstereo, full bandwidth surround outputs. The PRO LOGIC II modesprogrammed into this receiver are “MOVIE”, “ MUSIC” and “PROLOGIC”. The “MOVIE” mode of the PRO LOGIC II has preset character-istics to produce a calibrated, high-level surround sound playback whilethe MUSIC mode has user-adjustable characteristics to offer the threeoptical controls, like “Dimension”, “Center Width” and “Panorama”modes to allow optimization of the soundfields as desired. The “Dimen-sion” control allows the user to gradually adjust the soundfield eithertowards the front or towards the rear; the “Center Width” control allowsvarious adjustment of the left-center-right speakers' balance; the “Pan-orama mode” extends the front stereo images to include the surroundspeakers for an exciting “wraparound” effect with side wall imaging.Lucasfilm and THX are registered trademarks of Lucasfilm Ltd.* Optional in this mode.Front speakers (L, R)Subwoofer (SW)*Center speakerSurround speakers (L, R)Front speakers (L, R)Subwoofer (SW)*Center speakerSurround speakers (L, R)Front speakers (L, R)Subwoofer (SW)*Center speakerSurround speakers (L, R)
