2-8 Setting Up the SystemProtecting the System From DamageThere are several ways that you can protect the system frompossible damage. NEC CSD strongly recommends thefollowing protective measures: Connect a surge suppressor between the computer and agrounded wall outlet. A surge suppressor protects thesystem from sudden transient increases and decreases inelectrical power.Be sure to connect all peripherals, such as the monitor andprinter, to the surge suppressor. The surge protector shouldbe the only device that you plug into the wall outlet. Avoid repeated power-on cycles. These subject the systemcomponents to temperature variations and stress. Disconnect the system from telephone and power lineswhen an electrical storm threatens. If you have afax/modem, lightning can travel in on the phone line anddamage both the fax/modem and the system unit.Lightening can also travel in on power lines and damagethe monitor and system unit. Be sure that system power is off before you connect ordisconnect a cable. Never make cable changes when thesystem power is on. Doing so can damage the system andits peripherals. Use BIOS Setup utility options to protect against viruses(see “Security Menu” in Chapter 3). Use appropriate virusdetection software regularly to protect the system fromcomputer viruses. If you plan to use software programs other than NEC CSDsupplied software, NEC CSD strongly recommends thatyou take the necessary steps, such as virus checks, toprotect the system.
