16 SuperScript Color Laser Network GuideUsing DHCPDynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) allowsautomatic assignment of IP address and other IP parametersfor attached devices. The SuperScript color laser printerworks with DHCP in the following way.At power-up, the printer’s NIC broadcasts a DHCP requestfor an IP address. If a DHCP server is present, the requestwill be processed, and an IP address will be returned to theNIC. Upon receipt of the IP address, the NIC resets, andprints a Network Settings page. This shows the new IPaddress (and subnet mask, and default gateway, if any).Under factory default settings, once an IP address has beenassigned to it, the NIC will no longer broadcast DHCP requests. Ifyou uncheck IP Address in NVRAM, in the NetworkAdministration Page, the printer will broadcast a DHCP requesteach time you turn on the printer. The DHCP server may grant a temporary IP address, called atemporary lease or temporary reservation, which expireslater, or may grant a permanent or unlimited lease orreservation which does not expire.Devices that are granted a temporary lease will be notifiedbefore the lease expires and asked if they would like toextend the lease. The NIC will continue extending its leaseindefinitely (unless prohibited by your DHCP serverconfiguration), and thus maintain a consistent IP address.Important: If the NIC is not turned on or is not connected tothe network when the DHCP server is sending requests to extendthe lease, the lease will not be extended. The DHCP server willcancel the lease and may assign the IP address to another device. Therefore, it is highly recommended to explicitly specify the NIClease as permanent or unlimited in your DHCP serverconfiguration.Verify that your printer was assigned an IP address throughthe Network Settings page, then proceed to setting up yourworkstation to use the printer.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Unit Serial No: 992048 Version: 05.20Network Address: 00:40:af:79:19:80Network Topology: Ethernet Connector:RJ45Network Speed: 10 MegabitsNovell Network Information enabledPrint Server Name: NEC_992048Password Defined: NoPreferred Server Name not definedDirectory Services Context not definedFrame Type: Novell 802.3Peer-to-Peer Information enabledFrame Type: 802.3Network ID: 32803TCP/IP Network Information enabledFrame Type: Ethernet II Protocol Address: 131.241.45.84Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 131.241.45.254DNS Address: 0.0.0.0AppleTalk Network Information enabledFrame Type: 802.2 SNAP On 802.3Preferred Appletalk Zone:* San Jose EtherNet- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Novell Connection InformationPrinter Name: NEC_992048_PFile Server: LABNW312Queue: NEC_992048_Q Priority: 1 Attached: YesNo Notify DefinedPeer-to-Peer Connection InformationPrinter Name: NEC_992048AppleTalk Connection InformationAppleTalk Printer Name: Peggy’s SS4600 4TCP/IP Connection InformationPort Number: 10001- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -The Network Settings Page
